Nokia 6 2nd sell-out forces longer wait-time for buyers. Demand underestimated??

Did HMD really underestimated the demand for Nokia 6 in China?? Nokia 6 was sold out in no time in the second flash sale on January 26, after amassing some 1.4 million interests. The first flash sale was over within a minute too.

After first flash sale, the Nokia 6 was promptly put back for registering pre-order interests and even a date was known for next flash sale. But this time around Nokia 6 is not still open for registering interests days into second flash sale.

So, that begs the question, did they really underestimate Nokia 6 demand? It may seem so because Nokia 6 should have been back on pre-order for the third flash sale. But until now you can't register. This doesn't really augur well, as we had seen similar issues plaguing Nokia / Lumia devices stock situations in past, regardless of who was in-charge (Microsoft or Nokia).

Learn more about the Lumia 950 in our review at Pocketnow (one of our most extensive ever!): http://pocketnow.com/2015/12/04/lumia-950-review (Full description below)

When Microsoft announced in July that it was writing down almost the entire cost of its Nokia acquisition and laying off 7,800 employees from its phone division, many took it as a sign that the bell had finally tolled for Windows Phone. Despite a promising debut in 2010 and some very compelling offerings since, Microsoft's mobile platform has failed to gain significant traction, peaking at just 3.4% of the global market in 2013 before plummeting to its current low of 1.7%. Microsoft's restructuring, along with its move to port its Office productivity suite to iOS and Android, was seen by some as a tacit admission that it had lost the smartphone war – and mediocre hardware offerings like the Lumia 830 did little to change that perception.

The October launch of the Lumia 950 (and its larger sibling, the 950 XL) opened a new chapter in Microsoft's mobile history. The Lumia 950 is a bundle of contradictions: a halo smartphone in a ho-hum chassis; a cutting-edge operating system with a still-nascent ecosystem; a product built not necessarily to sell in volume, says Microsoft, but as a kind of concession to the long-suffering Windows Phone loyalists. In other words, the Lumia 950 is unlike any smartphone that's come before. While it probably doesn't represent the future of Windows on phones, it's one of the only two flagships available on the platform today. So is it worth the $600 Microsoft wants for it?

Only if you're a fan.

Thanks for checking out the Nokia Lumia 820 Review. This time around Nokia has separated its flagship, the Lumia 920, very distinctly in design from the 820. But in operation they are identical thanks to shared hardware. But a lacklustre camera performance and bland design make it less appealing. However, for those who want a robust device that can change its look on a whim, this is likely the choice for you. This review was conducted on a supplied review unit for a period of two weeks as per the supplying companies restriction on testing period. It was conducted with a personal sim and used everyday of that period as the reviewers primary device.

BlackBerry, Windows Phone threatened by flood of cheap Android devices

Video Rating: / 5

BlackBerry, Windows Phone threatened by flood of cheap Android devices For a while now, we've heard about BlackBerry and Windows Phone vendors betting big on expanding their presence in emerging markets by releasing cheaper devices aimed at consumers who are buying smartphones for the first time. But as Business Insider's Jay Yarow points out, there's major obstacle standing in these platforms' paths: No-name Android vendors that are pumping out a flood of cheap phones that sell in the 0 range. Yarow points to new research from Needham analyst Charlie Wolf showing that no-name Android vendors now account for roughly a quarter of all Android devices, or more than the combined Android market share of HTC, LG, Sony and Motorola. Wolf says that most of these no-name companies are "located in China" http://news.yahoo.com/blackberry-windows-phone-threatened-flood-cheap-android-devices-115045301.html

Just when you thought Windows Phone couldn’t get any more dead…

Generally speaking, Windows Phone is not doing super well in its quest to be a viable smartphone platform. It's not that the operating system is broken or even bad — though one could argue the latter — it's just that nobody really seems to want to use it. We rarely get any hard numbers on just how many Windows Phone devices Microsoft is managing to sell, but in its earnings call today the comp any did show its hand a bit, and things aren't looking great.

Don't Miss: Brand new Best Buy MacBook deal saves you $300 when you buy AppleCare

Buried in its overall positive earnings report, Microsoft noted that its revenue grouping labeled "More Personal Computing" dipped roughly five percent year over year, and that it was "driven primarily by lower phone revenue." Just how much lower? The company reported that revenue from phones declined by a whopping 81 percent, which figures to be right around $880 million.

There are a few factors that play into that huge drop. For starters, Microsoft's market share in smartphones has been in a downward spiral for many, many months now. As of the latest IDC report, Windows Phone represents just 0.3 percent of the smartphone market. At the end of 2015, the platform had 1.2 percent market share. On top of that, Microsoft just got done selling off its feature phone business — which uses the Nokia branding — to Foxconn. That transaction finalized in November, and likely played a part in the overall dive in phone revenue, but it's still not looking great for Windows mobile devices.

Microsoft has said it wants to reorganize its smartphone efforts and still plans to try to make Windows Phone a thing. At this point, it's hard to know whether that's a wise move or not.

Windows 10 Phone review for US readers

The Windows 10 phone has made a real splash in the world of mobile devices. But what makes this mobile phone choice special? It is a good option with plenty of features and many phone options to choose from.

    Windows 10 phone

The competition in the smartphone industry has been rather cutthroat in recent time. The Android and iOS operating systems have been fighting each other while Blackberry is aiming to adapt to changes in the industry. Microsoft has jumped in the fray with its Windows 10 phones.

Microsoft has introduced a variety of Windows 10 phone models with some of them being made in partnership with Nokia. The Windows 10 phone marks a significant advancement in the field of mobile technology as it entails bringing the popular Windows operating system to the mobile phone world.

But what makes Windows 10 phones so appealing? Better yet, what types of phones in this line work best?

    What Makes the OS Special?

The mobile version of Windows 10 is made with a variety of features designed to make it immersive and user-friendly. These features include the following:

  • Continuum allows you to use apps on both your phone and desktop when Windows 10 is used on both of them. You can load a file from your desktop onto your phone as you can transfer your progress between devices seamlessly.
  • The compatibility of apps on the Windows 10 OS is strong between mobile and desktop devices. Many of the programs you download onto your phone can also work on your computer. You will need a proper account to link the two together though.
  • The Cortana personal assistant is a smart feature on the OS that works to take notes, list reminders and much more. It can also find information for you as needed.
  • Many of the popular Microsoft Office apps have their own mobile versions you can use on your phone. You can load up Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint among other things. These also work well with the Continuum feature.
  • The control scheme on this mobile OS is streamlined with added quick action settings and even voice controls. Those controls allow you to let Cortana find things on the phone for you.
  • The Microsoft Edge browser is a popular feature on these phones. Designed as a replacement to the Internet Explorer browser, Edge offers a more streamlined approach to online surfing. It offers an easier interface to work with.
  • Powerful LED screens are featured on many of these models. These create bright displays that don't require the use of bothersome backlights.
  • What Phones Can You Find?

There are many Windows 10 phones that you can take a closer look at when finding ways to enjoy this appealing operating system. Still, many of these phones are in the same line.

The Lumia line was adopted by Microsoft from Nokia as a means of having a setup that may be used for the company's phones. The phones are designed in many forms:

  • The Lumia 950 is designed with a 5.2-inch Quad HD screen and a 1.8GHz hexa-core processor. Lumia 950 has a 20-megapixel camera with a triple LED flash feature. It uses a USB-C port to help charge up the phone quickly. It can also be found for about $350.
  • The Lumia 950 XL has many of the same features but is also a little larger. It has a 5.7-inch screen and a 2.0GHz octa-core processor, for instance. 950 Lumia still uses the same USB-C port for quick charging needs. It does have a dual-sim feature for added connectivity. At about $400,0 it will certainly cost more to get.
  • Many smaller phones in the Lumia family are available too. These include the Lumia 650, a phone with a 5-inch screen and p to 16 GB in storage with support for a 200 GB microSD card. It can be found for $150.
  • The Lumia 550 is designed as a bargain option at $80. It has a 4.7-inch screen and 5-megapixel camera so it is still a great unit with plenty of power added to it.
  • Other phones are designed with multimedia functions in mind. The Lumia Icon is one phone that offers a 20-megapixel camera, four microphones for taking in sound and a 1080p display that projects high-resolution videos amazingly well.
  • operating system

These are only a few of the phones that use the operating system. These all come from the Lumia line, what with Microsoft's relationship to the people behind that line. The designs on these phones make for some appealing choices that will make a difference to anyone looking to get the most out of their phones.

The Windows 10 phone certainly marks a real sea change in the world of mobile technology. With this phone, people have an easier time with taking care of a variety of things on their phones while also getting access to various great apps. The real question at this juncture is precisely where the technology will head out to in the future.

Microsoft Surface Phone In Line To Challenge Samsung Galaxy S8 And iPhone 8

Microsoft's Surface Phone should be available in 2017.

    More

Rumors about Microsoft expanding its Surface line with a smartphone/mini computer continue to grow. According to Trusted Reviews, a recently granted Microsoft patent reveals a new type of mobile device that switches between tablet and smartphone modes using folded hinges. The website explains wh y Microsoft's new smartphone is still a risky business venture.

"Microsoft has had very limited success with mobile, struggling to acquire any meaningful amount of market share. With titans like Apple and Google currently dominating the industry, Microsoft is under immense pressure to crack mobile successfully," says columnist Sean Keach.

The article adds that the Surface Phone will probably be the last roll of the dice for Microsoft since recent smartphones like the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL weren't able to carry Microsoft to glory.

    More

"Unfortunately, the Surface Phone will probably be the last roll of the dice for Microsoft. Despite the company making much of Windows 10 Mobile, the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL weren't able to carry Microsoft to mobile glory. Now, Microsoft needs to launch a perfect phone that can convert already invested iOS and Android users to Windows."

Besides the foldable design, Gizmodo India says that the Surface Phone may offer new display technology.

"Microsoft could be looking towards dual 5.7-inch OLED screens where the second screen could be swapped completely as a full-sized keyboard, and when not in use, can double up as a secondary display for reading eBooks or playing games or consuming video content."

#SmartPhone #Lumia – Lumia 435 Discount Spotted In Walmart; Smartphone Now Costs $29 : Lumia 435 was an entry-level smartphone launched by Microsoft two years ago. Although the device was not so successful in grabbing popularity compared to the Lumia 520, the company continued to manufacture it. Now, Lumia 435 is available at Walmart for just $29.

Lumia 435 was spotted at Walmart with a huge discount. This could be the best thing today for those who are fans of the Windows phone. The giant retailer is now offering the unlocked Lumia 435 for just $28.75 which means you can save $18.98 on the device. This is a good deal for Lumia lovers.

At the launch, the entry-level smartphone was sold originally for $80. However, after a couple of months, the price of the handset went down to just $50 permanently. Previously, the giant retailer offered the device at $47.73. Now, the buyers can own the device at just $29. You can grab the device at this price for a limited time only.

It seems that the advancement of the latest technology made the retailer offer the phone at a much lower cost. It is also speculated that Walmart wants to get rid of the smartphone based on old technologies. Check out the Walmart website for this attractive deal.

Microsoft Best Email Feature for iPhones Arriving on Windows Phones in April

Microsoft announced last year that it was working on bringing Outlook's Focused Inbox feature available on Android and iOS to Windows 10 Mobile devices, but the company did not provide a specific timeline to let us know when the rollout is supposed to happen.

And now in an update to the original blog post, the company reveals that Windows 10 Mobile devices should start getting the new Focused Inbox feature for Outlook in April, which most likely means that it could be part of the Creators Update for Windows 10 due the same month.

The company hasn't mentioned the build that Windows 10 Mobile devices would need to be running to get this email feature, but it's probably safe to say that the stable release of Creators Update would be the one targeted by the release.

    Focused Inbox for Outlook.com

At the same time, Microsoft is also working on releasing the same feature for Outlook.com users, and the company says that April is the target in this case too.

"Outlook.com web experience: We have rolled this out to tens of millions of users already. We will continue rolling the feature out and it will be available to all users by April 2017. All supported Outlook.com account will be able to see Focused Inbox in the Mail app for Windows 10 starting in February 2017," it says.

Focused Inbox is an advanced feature for Outlook app that automatically prioritizes emails that are important to you. It tracks the messages and the people you interact with most often and then whenever a new email arrives, it automatically places it in the Focused Inbox should it need to be prioritized.

This way, promotional messages, newsletters, or even spam that somehow reaches your inbox will be placed in the "Other" category, putting the emphasis on the emails you need the most. The feature is already available for the Android and iOS versions of Outlook.

My move from Windows Phone to Android

A couple of weeks ago, I made the switch from a Lumia 950 XL to a OnePlus 3T. This also meant that I moved from the Windows 10 Mobile operating system to Android. I thought I'd write a quick review about the experience I've had switching platforms. This is just my collection of opinions and observations, not a full review. Let's begin.

    Software experience

As a Windows 10 Mobile user (which I'll call "W10M" from now on, for brevity), I had a lot of opinions regarding what Android would be like. I thought it would be a slow, complicated mess with little to no updates. It's actually a lot different.

I updated my OnePlus to Android 7.0 the day I got it and I started to feel right at home with rich, actionable notifications (that are also bundled too), the ability to make things on the screen smaller (the default interface size is a little too big for my liking), and support for split-screen multitasking (useful if I want to watch a video and browse Twitter at the same time).

For people who think you're forced to use Google apps/services on Android, let me tell you that that isn't true. I've disabled most of the preloaded Google apps in favour of my own choices — but I've actually grown fond of some of these apps. Chrome is my browser of choice here, thanks to its data saver feature; Google Maps remains best-in-class for finding things and I even downloaded the Google "Wallpapers" app, which allows you to set up a wallpaper that changes daily.

Android Pay is simply awesome. I don't need to say anymore.

Apps I don't use that many apps, here's the majority of them.

Pretty much every W10M user who switches to another platform like Android or iOS often gets excited by the selection of apps that are now available to them. However, I have had no such excitement. Apart from a couple of titles, most of the apps I am using on Android are also on Windows (the exception is Google Wallpapers, and a local bus app).

This doesn't mean there's not an advantage to using Android. Many apps here are higher quality and more feature complete than their W10M counterparts. The Twitter app, for example, supports features like the creation of Moments while the Outlook app had the Focussed Inbox feature that's still missing from Windows.

I even miss some apps that are on W10M and have no Android version. myTube, for example, is a much better YouTube client than the official app (with support for background audio, no ads, etc.) and not having access to all the apps I've purchased over time (such as apps like Tweetium, Readit and Vinci) is a bit unfortunate.

    Hardware and performance

This isn't exactly a fair comparison since the 950 XL has the controversial Snapdragon 810 paired with just 3 GB of RAM, whilst the 3T has the latest Snapdragon 821 SoC and 6 GB of RAM. The 3T automatically wins here, but remember: it's a year newer than the 950 XL.

The OnePlus 3T (inside of a sandstone case, if you're curious)

In the camera department, the Lumia is clearly the better device. The 20 MP sensor combined with Microsoft's image processing technology can deliver some stunning shots. This doesn't mean that the 16 MP camera on the OnePlus is bad though — it performs admirably and the photos it produces are much more accurate in terms of colour and saturation. Also, since the Lumia shoots by default in 16:9 aspect ratio, photos come out at 16 MP anyway (changing the aspect to 4:3 lets the phone shoot at full resolution). Both phones can shoot 4K video at 30 FPS or 1080p video at up to 60 FPS and they both have optical image stabilisation. The Lumia has a slight edge with its triple LED flash which helps produce slightly more accurate lighting (putting a flash-lit image from the Lumia and the OnePlus side-by-side shows the Lumia is significantly superior). I still miss having the dedicated camera key around for quick shots, b ut a double click of the OP's power key jumps into the camera, which is nice.

The camera software is a different story. Both phones have automatic and manual options — the Lumia wins in the manual category with its intuitive slider controls, although the OnePlus camera UI has a similar, if more toned down, manual mode. The image processing, however, on the 3T appears to be less aggressive than it is on the Lumia (its images remind me a lot of the amazing camera on the Lumia 930/1520), resulting in images that might seem a bit duller but ultimately have more accurate colours. This doesn't make the camera bad on the Lumia at all, it's easy enough to correct the images later in Photoshop (which I often do). Talking of Photoshop, RAW mode is an option on native camera apps of both devices.

The fingerprint scanner on the 3T is so much better than the iris scanning technology the 950 XL has. Iris scanning does indeed feel futuristic, and it's even pretty accurate (despite still carrying a "beta" tag), but it's still more cumbersome than a simple fingerprint reader — which is able to unlock the phone in less than a second. I still can't understand why Microsoft chose iris scanning.

OnePlus's implementation of Glance screen is a lot nicer than Microsoft's. Notifications are actionable, and there's actually more information to begin with. Glace is still unique with it's ability to have a separate nighttime colour, but since I keep my phone on my desk overnight, I never used that feature.

Everything else hardware wise isn't really comparable. The 1080p screen on the OnePlus doesn't look like it's a lower resolution than the 1440p on the Lumia unless you're holding the phone to your face and really pixel-peeping. Both phones feature USB-C, although oddly enough, the OnePlus is limited to USB 2.0 speeds as opposed to USB 3.0 on the Lumia (while I am fine with USB 2.0 myself since I rarely need to transfer large files at high speeds, I can understand why some people might be let down). OnePlus's "Dash Charge" technology is extremely impressive, and has saved my skin on a few occasions where I've woken up with a low battery but needed to get going as soon as possible. The battery capacity on both phones are pretty much equal, although the more energy efficient Snapdragon 821 means the 3T is likely to last longer than the Lumia.

    Conclusions

This isn't me trying to convince you one way or another. It isn't even a "proper" review. This is just my experience on going from one platform to another and maybe it will help you if you choose to do the same in the future. I'm in no way "done" with Windows 10 Mobile — I'm still installing Insider builds to test new features (in fact I have two devices, both the 950 XL and a 930), I'll still keep my Lumia for its camera and who knows, maybe I will return to using the OS full time in the future (with hopefully new hardware?).

I don't regret my switch at all, however. It's refreshing to use a platform I have never used before. I'm comfortable with Android right now, and will likely stick around for a while and see what the future brings for smartphones of all platforms.

But anyway, if you made it this far, thank you for reading. I'm on Twitter too, if you're into that sort of thing.

Microsoft Lumia 950 Is On Sale Again At Microsoft & AT&T Stores; Installment Plan Also Available

UNITED STATES - Microsoft has once again started selling Microsoft Lumia 950. The device has also made a successful comeback on the AT&T website.

    Microsoft Stopped Selling Lumia 950

According to MS Poweruser, U.S. consumers were recently not able to purchase Microsoft Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. The devices were out of stock and Microsoft recently stopped selling them in the United States and in other countries.

Microsoft & AT&T Starts Selling Lumia 950 Again

After a brief freeze in Microsoft Lumia 950 sales, Microsoft started selling the device again last week. The company offers the device together with Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 550. Customers can now buy the devices at Microsoft stores in the United States and in other countries. Microsoft is offering the black, white and unlocked variant of Microsoft Lumia 950.

According to Phone Arena, Microsoft Lumia 950 has also made a triumphant return to AT&T. AT&T has also started selling the Microsoft Lumia 950 once again on its website for $298.99. However, AT&T is only selling the black variant of Microsoft Lumia 950.

    Microsoft Lumia 950 Features Revealed

The Microsoft Lumia 950 features a 5.2-inch WQHD Clear Black display with 1440 x 2560 resolution, and a 3000 mAh battery. It also features a 20 MP rear camera that includes a f/1.9 aperture, OIS, and a Tricolor LED flash. The device also has a 5 MP front camera that can be used to snap selfies and record videos

The Microsoft Lumia 950 is also equipped with 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, and a microSD slot with a capacity of 200 GB. Microsoft Lumia 950 also features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset, a hexa-core 1.8 GHz CPU, the Adreno 418 GPU, and support for Continuum.

    Get The Device In Installments

Customers can purchase the Microsoft Lumia 950 on the AT&T website and in Microsoft stores for $298.99. However, they can also choose an installment plan for over 30 months. Instead of paying $298.99 at once, they can just pay $9.97 every month.

Microsoft Surface Phone - everything we THINK we know so far

surface phone microsoft release price priceGETTY

What does Microsoft have planned for its rumoured Surface Phone?

2017 is set to be a big year for Microsoft, as the company prepares a number of updates around its Windows 10 software, as well as several new hardware releases - including the long-rumoured Surface Phone.

Reports of a Microsoft-built smartphone have been circulating for some time, leading to speculation that the device could be launching soon.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently raised hopes among Microsoft fans that the device may be in development when he hinted last month that a Surface Phone could be "the ultimate mobile device".

But how much do we know about this possibly ground-breaking device?

Sun, January 1, 2017 Microsoft has big plans for Windows 10 in 2017 - here's our run-down of what exactly you can expect. Windows 10 could soon be coming to smart home products

    MICROSOFT

Windows 10 could soon be coming to smart home products

    Design and build

As it proved with the release of the Surface Pro hybrid and Surface Book laptop, Microsoft is not afraid to go their own way when it comes to designing a new product from scratch.

Therefore, it's expected that the Surface Phone will be rather different to many other smartphones out today, and bear little resemblance to the company's previous Windows Phone devices.

Among the rumours surrounding the Surface Phone's design is that it could feature a similar build to the company's existing Surface Pro and Surface Book devices.

Photos leaked online earlier this month claiming to show off the Surface Phone for the first time, appeared to confirm this, suggesting that Microsoft wants all its hardware devices to blend together.

If Microsoft wants the Surface Phone to be a truly premium device, we're expecting an all-metal body, complete with curved glass display, much like the recent flagships from the likes of Samsung and HTC.

    microsoft surface phone design rumoursWEIBO

Will the Surface Phone share these design similarities?

However, the device could also feature something truly eye-catching, as a patent filing granted to Microsoft this month revealed that the company is working on a device that would be able to fold upon itself.

From the standard tablet-shaped display, the device would feature a hinged design that would allow it to fold and create a screen the size of a smartphone.

That means that you could be watching a film on the main tablet screen, then quickly pause and fold the device into a phone to make a call or reply to a text message.

This would all be controlled using an updated version of Microsoft's Surface Pen stylus, giving you precise control with just a tap.

One patent filing suggested that the Surface Phone may fold in the middleHardware

If the Surface Phone is truly looking to be a fully-fledged work and leisure device, it will need some powerful hardware inside.

Among the other rumours concerning the device is that it will use Qualcomm's newest Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip, which was revealed back at CES 2017 earlier this month.

This would put the Surface Phone among the most powerful smartphones available on the market today.

In order to support this strong processor, the Surface Phone would require a sizeable battery, especially if Microsoft wants the device to be an all-day work machine.

The iPhone 7 Plus currently packs in a 2900mAh battery, with the Samsung Galaxy S7 also powered by an 3000mAh unit, so expect something along those lines.

    Software

Microsoft is hard at work on a new version of Windows 10, with the free Creators Update download set to be released in April.

But a Surface Phone would require an entirely new software platform to run on, especially now that Microsoft appears to have shuttered plans for Windows 10 Mobile.

It's unlikely that Microsoft would opt for a version of Android or iOS to power its new device, as companies such as Nokia and BlackBerry have chosen to do, as it has previously shown a strong desire to build all its own components.

Alternatively, the new device could run a more powerful 64-bit version of Windows 10 Mobile, with Microsoft packing in a number of new improvements and features to make its mobile software easier to operate.

Continuum – Windows 10's ability to run a desktop PC-like environment on a large screen from a smartphone – could bring a new level of productivity for the phone.

Including the ability to connect Surface Phone to an external keyboard, mouse and display to run full desktop applications like Office 2016 or Adobe Photoshop would also be of interest to business customers.

microsoft surface phone build design foldWEIBO

The Surface Phone may feature this eye-catching designRelease date and price

So when might we see the Surface Phone?

Microsoft is rather busy at the moment preparing the release of Windows 10 Creators Update, with the new software upgrade set to arrive in April.

This means that the Surface Phone may not arrive until later in 2017.

Given the company's previous release cycles, it looks that an October 2017 launch could be the most likely.

As for price, given the launches of the previous Surface devices, Microsoft will be keen to promote its smartphone as a premium product.

This could well mean a premium price tag too - with current flagship devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7 costing around £539 and £579 respectively, we're expecting a price somewhere in this area.

For now, though, we'll just have to wait and see what Microsoft has in store.

Windows 10 Mobile news recap: Common shell includes mobile, Microsoft Store selling unlocked Alcatel IDOL 4s and more

Welcome back to our weekly Windows 10 Mobile news recap series, where we go over the top stories of the past week in the world of Microsoft's mobile operating system. Let's get started.

PC, Mobile, Xbox to join "One Windows" shell

The "One Windows" promise is something that everyone familiar with Microsoft has been seeing them working towards. With Windows 10 becoming the centerpiece for all of Microsoft's products, the focus on uniting the company's ecosystem of products has been extremely important. According to some recent news, we'll soon be seeing Microsoft rolling Windows 10 on PC, Mobile, and Desktop into one big shell – something familiar across all devices. This will start happening over the course of the next few major updates, after the Creators Update.

Unlocked Alcatel IDOL 4s on sale in Microsoft Stores

The Lumia brand is on the way out, with some phones being unlisted in Microsoft Stores already. 2017 is going to be the year of the third party manufacturers, and we're kicking it off with the sale of the unlocked Alcatel Idol 4s. The phone goes for about $470, making it significantly more affordable that its $800 competitor in the HP Elite X3.

New Fitbit notifications go into private testing

Those Fitbit users who happen to have a Windows 10 Mobile device can rejoice knowing that a big improvement is coming – eventually, anyways. Private testing has begun for the technology that will open up things like SMS and calendar notifications on Fitbit devices through Windows 10 Mobile. While the testing isn't available for the public to sign up to yet, this phase of testing means that it can't be too far off.

Scientists sequence DNA with a Windows Phone

It took a bit of modification, but some scientists over in Sweden used a Lumia 1020 to sequence DNA. The Lumia wasn't the only phone used in the study, and it wouldn't have been possible without some custom modification in order to improve the 1020's capabilities, but the fact remains that our humble operating system helped to make leaps and bounds in science this week.

The new NexDock will turn your phone into a desktop – sort of

The NexDock – a docking unit that's compatible with a great number of desktop and mobile devices – is going to be working with Intel's new Compute Card. The Computer Card, which is a fully functional computer that's roughly the size of a credit card, will be combining with the NexDock to turn any device – including your Windows 10 Mobile handset – into a fully functional desktop. While it's not clear if many people will adopt this "all-in-one" approach with their tech lives, it'll be interesting to see how this makes waves.

Thanks for joining us. If you want all of the news as it happens, keep an eye on our Windows 10 Mobile tag.

Nokia Lumia 1020 used as microscope in low-cost DNA sequencer

The Nokia Lumia 1020 was launched back in 2013, but with its large 41MP sensor and innovative down-scaling algorithms is by many still regarded as one of the best smartphone cameras today.

Now, a team of researchers from the University of California, Sweden's Stockholm University and Uppsala University has used exactly that camera to design a smartphone-based low-cost DNA sequencer and molecular analyzer. A $500 3D-printed attachment turns the Lumia camera into a microscope that can then be used by health workers in developing nations and remote locations to find genetic mutations that cause diseases without analyzing samples in a lab. Usually, the equipment needed for this task costs tens of thousands of dollars.

When testing, tissue samples are placed in a small container. The Lumia and optical attachment are then used to record multi-color fluorescence and bright-field images. The captured image data is fed into an algorithm for analysis in order to find any possible mutations. The teams says the design can detect even a small amount of cancer cells or other genetic mutations within a large amount of normal cells.

Given the Lumia 1020 has been out of production for quite some time it's good news that the optical attachment can be adapted to work with more recent smartphone models.

Microsoft Surface Phone 2017 Designs Tease Expanding Display

The rumors about Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and its widely speculated Surface Phone continue to surge well into the new year. In an interview two months ago, Satya Nadella, the U.S. software major's CEO, made it clear that Microsoft has no plans to exit the mobile phone market. Although, the chief executive did not go into any specifics about the actual future of Microsoft smartphones.

Filling that silence, rumors and alleged leaks come crawling out the woodwork. There is talk of a incoming Microsoft handset with a fold-out display. The product is backed by reports of an ongoing patent filing by the company. Analysts are adamant that Microsoft intends to add a new range of smartphones to its Surface lineup. Microsoft actively pursues to add new dimensions of innovation and convenience to its gadgets. The firm's efforts have not gone unnoticed, and translate well into the growing appeal of it hardware.

Speaking to the Australian Financial Review, Nadella explains Microsoft's refreshed approach on consumer and business products."We don't want to be driven buy just envy of what others have. What can we bring? That's where I look at any device form factor or any technology, even AI."

    Powerful push with Surface Phone

The Surface Phone would be a strong push from Microsoft — a company that is currently witnessing its smartphone ventures fall flat. The firm's mutli-billion adoption of Nokia's smartphone business shows no signs of getting off the ground. Analysts expect the Lumia range to be written off. Microsoft's new push in the smartphone segment could come in the form of a surface device. Nadella claims the company had to go back to the drawing board with new ideas driving the design and function of its next set of products.

The alleged, upcoming mobile device is said to offer near-PC like capacity, using the latest in Intel's early 2017 processors. It is naturally bound to be a Windows phone. The latest and most innovative use of the Windows 10 Mobile operating system is also a given.

The Elite x3 from HP is thought to be a massive hint at where Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) plans to take its next handset. HP's device is a Windows Phone with a near PC-like capacity. The device produced by one of Microsoft's leading partners stands as a good example of the company's mobile ambitions.

"What we are going to do is focus [our] effort on places that have differentiation." Nadella said. "If you take Windows Phone, where we are differentiated in Windows Phone, its manageability, its security, its Continuum capability, that is the ability to have a phone that, in fact, can even act like a PC."

    Foldout Microsoft phone

It is reported that Microsoft is trying to obtain the patent rights for a device with a screen that folds out. The feature would allow the small, hand-held gadget to be transformed into a tablet. MSPoweruser was the first to report the filing. At the very least, it proves that Microsoft is playing around with the idea of a foldable smartphone. More details about the gadget can be found here.

Of course, Microsoft is one of the numerous tech giants who file patents that never make it to production. Such reports often need to be taken with a grain of salt. On the other hand, products like the new Surface Studio were leaked months ahead of their official launch. It is possible this fold-out design won't make it to the Surface Phone. However, it definitely shows how Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) plans to build more bridges between everyday hardware.

REVIEWED: The XZ, featuring Sony's best mobile camera yet

    Sony Xperia XZ

Johannesburg - Sony Mobile's flagship offering to the South African market encompasses a beautiful design, user friendly experience and great camera in the form of the Xperia XZ.

Outshone by devices from manufacturers such as Huawei, Samsung and Apple; the underrated XZ has much to offer its users as an overall well-designed product.

Officially unveiled in September 2016, the XZ boasts impressive specifications even among its top-tier competitors - the most outstanding of which its powerful 23-megapixel camera.

The entire design of the device feels rigid with a slate form similar to that of older Nokia Lumia devices.

    Why go dual?

The trend of smartphone releases today hinge on dual-camera functionality where one camera is usually a monochrome for black and white, and the other colour. This in turn helps to enhance the depth of field in a photograph. Sony, though, chose to opt for its renowned single lens camera.

While dual-cameras often produce a somewhat digital effect when making use of the wide-angle feature, similar to an after-edit on an image, the XZ manages to maintain a more natural effect in keeping the subject of an image in focus and the background blur.

In addition the camera features a sharp, crisp and vivid end-result.

The cameras phase-detection feature offers sharper images for objects in motion.

The 13-megapixel selfie camera performs just as well its primary camera capturing some of the best and vibrant images from a facing camera.

    User-friendliness

Unlocking a device through its fingerprint scanner is a standard feature in a premium smartphone today, but position of the scanner plays a role in how rapidly a user is able to unlock and use a device.

Surprisingly, top-selling smartphones from Samsung and Apple have terrible 'Home Affairs-style' thumb-pressing methods to unlocking devices with the scanner placed at below the screen.

READ: Sony's Xperia X certainly captures your imagination

Then there is the Huawei/LG approach of situating the scanner at the back of the device, which offers a more natural way of unlocking a device with an index finger behind the device. But unfortunately the scanner is concealed when the device lies on its back.

But Sony comes out tops with its scanner on the right hand side of the device.

With numerous fingerprint IDs allowed on the device while holding it face-up, the thumb can be registered to unlock the device.

Scrolling through the device is an easy navigation with instant access to most-used apps within easy reach of the thumb after unlocking.

Sony Mobile's layering on top of the Android operating system is more subtle than in previous models with a more vanilla version of the OS on the device – a win for Android fans resulting in a less buggy device that operates more effieciently, even with numerous apps installed.

    Pitfalls

While fighting in the priciest bracket of smartphones available in the country, the XZ notably features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 - one of the most powerful chipsets in a smartphone.

But the device only features a 2900 mAh battery and features a 5.2 inch display.

It is evident that Sony has optimised the battery to power consumed by the unit, but a larger battery always offers more peace of mind.

To buy or not to buy

With phablet-sized smartphones and larger displays featuring in most devices, the XZ is a phone for those looking for a smaller device.

For those that demand a powerful camera from their device, the XZ is a win.

Most importantly the devices ease of use in its design and navigation make it a worthwhile product.
