AOC P2779VC 27-inch 1080p display has integrated Qi wireless charging

AOC-Qi-Dispay2

1080p monitors are a dime a dozen nowadays -- the market is saturated with them. Heck, many people are opting for displays with much better resolution too. In other words, it is virtually impossible to have a 1080p monitor stand out from the crowd.

And yet, AOC has managed to do so. How? The company has integrated a Qi charger into the base of its newest 27-inch monitor -- the P2779VC. If you own a compatible smartphone, you can charge it wirelessly by placing it on the monitor. That unique feature aside, this PLS display has other cool aspects too, such as 8-bit color depth and 178-degree viewing angles.

"The P2779VC features Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution that allows for high-definition image quality in terms of clarity and vivid colors. When you have Full HD resolution with dynamic contrast ratio, the result is crisp detailed images with incredible contrast, giving you bright vivid colors that comes to life every time. The impressive 20,000,000:1 contrast ratio reveals darker image areas in greater depth and detail. The P2779VC also boasts a 5ms response time to eliminate drag. Finally, the P2779VC comes with a plethora of connectivity features including VGA and two HDMI, which gives you high-definition video and audio, perfect for watching those videos or highly-detailed images at home", says AOC.

The value-focused company further says, "Qi Wireless Charging technology comes from the Chinese meaning "natural energy". The technology is an interface standard developed by the Wireless Power Consortium for inductive electrical power transfer that wirelessly charges a compatible device's battery using induction transfer. The monitor's Qi Wireless Charging Base removes the hassle of cables and allows you to keep your device in view while charging and using the display, without having to worry about finding an outlet nearby. Compatible devices include Samsung Galaxy S5-6/Edge, Google Nexus 4-7, Motorola Droid Maxx, and Nokia Lumia 920-1520, among others"AOC-Qi-Dispay4

AOC shares the following specifications.

Microsoft Surface Phone now Rumored to Feature Snapdragon 835 SoC & 4GB/6GB RAM

The Windows 10 powered Lumia 950 and 950 XL smartphones launched last year went unnoticed in the world dominated by Android and iOS powered smartphones. Though Microsoft came with some useful features and decent hardware, none of them attracted many customers. Even the company accepted that their smartphone business is not going well and is now more focusing on the Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) which are expected to go mainstream in the next few years. However, the Surface Phone from Microsoft is one device that has been in the rumors for several months.

Initially, the company had officially said to be working on Surface Phone, but there aren't any timely updates over this project. A few months back, it is said to be using Snapdragon 820 SoC along with whopping 8GB RAM. Now with Qualcomm introducing the Snapdragon 835 SoC, the rumors mills now came out with new specifications. Under the hood, the Surface Phone will be using the Snapdragon 835 SoC and will be available in 4GB and 6GB RAM variants. The company is said to be working on different configurations to give the best output performance.

With the Surface Phone featuring higher configuration, it is said to be supporting X86 apps in the Continuum mode. The Snapdragon 810 powered Lumia 950 and 950 XL smartphones also decently performed while using in the Continuum mode. With the Continuum mode, the monitor, keyboard, and mouse can be connected to the smartphone via Continuum dock and used it as a regular Windows 10 powered monitor. Since there won't any new Lumia devices, the Surface Phone will only next smartphone launch from Redmond giant. However, the Surface Phone will be made officially only by the end of 2017, so one more year of Surface Phone rumors will continue.

If it is launched at the end of 2017, we might also see all new hardware. As of now, the Snapdragon 835 powered Surface Phone will be running on 64-bit Windows 10 Mobile OS. It will also support Quick Charge 4.0 fast charging technology that is said to give 5 hours of usage with just 5 minutes of charging. Along with the Surface Phone, we might also see several Surface branded accessories at the time of official launch. Microsoft is said to be working on bringing 3-in-1 form factor with the device can also be used as a laptop with the additional accessory instead of mobile or a complete PC.

Talking about the display, the device is said to be sporting a 5.5-inch display with Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution. Since all these specifications are based on the early prototype versions, the final product might come with different internal.

Microsoft Surface phone is apparently ready for trial

Rumours about Microsoft Surface Phone have been floating for a very long time and so far we only have rumours. Today, we have one more. While previous rumours suggested that we may not see a Surface Phone any time soon, it is probably closer than most people think, at least according to a report by Chinese financial publication Commercial Times,

The Commercial Times of Taiwan reports that Chinese ODM Pegatron, which produces the iPhone and also the Surface Studio, is currently running production trials on the mythical Surface Phone.

    Surface-Phone-Windows-10-concept-1.jpg

That handset, which is expected some time in 2017 or early 2018, is expected to include features which sets it apart from other smartphones, such as being able to run x86 apps on Continuum mode.

No other information has been given and this hasn't been confirmed one way or the other from Microsoft (seriously, when do they ever confirm anything?) but with the new phone expected to release sometime in 2017, it would make sense that trial productions would begin soon. Although, if you haven't heard of the Surface Phone before, Microsoft hasn't even confirmed or denied the existence of such a device either, let alone rumours regarding the same. Although rumours have persisted that the device has been in some sort of pre-production throughout 2016.

Satya Nadella, Microsoft's chief executive, has also intimated the idea of a Surface Phone that doesn't mirror smartphone trends of late, "We will continue to be in the phone market not as defined by today's market leaders, but by what it is that we can uniquely do in what is the most ultimate mobile device," Nadella told the Australian Financial Review.

The term "ultimate mobile device" renders the Surface Phone quite ripe for speculation. Exactly what will set the Surface Phone apart from the abundance of smartphone today other than the aforementioned features remains nebulous, but Nadella has confirmed that Microsoft is currently conducting innovative research that will suture its wounded smartphone efforts and subsequently reclaim its presence in the smartphone market.

Some other recent rumours about the smartphone's specs have talked about a Snapdragon 835 chip being at the core of the device, with 6GB and 4GB RAM variants, and a 5.5 inch QHD display. Apparently Continuum will only run on the 6GB RAM variant.

Do you think the Surface Phone is real? What would you want from it, that'll make you switch from an iPhone or Android?

Reset app feature coming soon to Windows 10 Mobile

While we are excited about the new sharing UI, meanwhile we heard that a new feature is coming in the Windows 10 Mobile. According to Aggiornamenti Lumia report the internal update for Windows 10 Mobile will be getting a rather simple but essential feature: App Reset.

So many times when an app is not working properly we often uninstall it and reinstall it. But soon this App Reset feature will allow user to delete the app's save data and free up resources. So that app can run smoothly.

The Windows 10 Creators Update will add this feature to the Windows 10 Mobile devices under the Settings > Apps & Features > Selected apps > Advanced options. However, there is no information about that weather this feature will arrive for PC/laptop too or not.

    app-reset-windows-10-mobile

Aggiornamenti Lumia also reported that the users will be able to view memory space occupied without colorful tags as well as more information will be displayed about an app's physical memory and network data usage.

Of course this feature will first arrive for the Windows Insider in the fast ring. But there is no confirmation about this yet. Maybe it could be arrive with the next Windows Insider build or we have to wait more for it.

Are you looking forward to for App Reset button on your Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile devices? Let us know in a comment below.

Moly X1 Windows 10 Mobile phone crowdfunding is quite telling

If you slapped Android on a smartphone like the Moly X1, it would probably fare better on Indiegogo. It probably won't sell out, given the inherent risks of crowdfunding. It probably would have gotten more than 12 (at the time of this writing).

That more than disappointing low figure is the fate that faces the Moly X1 campaign on Indiegogo. Trying to ride on the popularity of the HP Elite x3, the Moly X1 tries to offer fans a more affordable Windows 10 Mobile device. But it has only proven one rather painful point: hardware isn't the problem.

To be fair, hardware naturally limits what software can do, and it is perhaps more evident on Windows 10 Mobile. Not that the Moly X1's specs are particularly low.

It carries a 5.5-inch 720p screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of expandable storage, a 13 megapixel rear camera, a 5 megapixel front camera, and a 2.600 mAh battery. By all intents and purposes, it would have made for a decent lower mid-range smartphone.

With that hardware, however, the Moly X1 misses out on one of the most interesting features of Windows 10 Mobile: Continuum for Phones. For a smartphone that advertises itself as a "New Phone for Working", it limits you to working only on that somewhat low res screen.

Of course, Continuum or not, you'd still be limited to using only supported UWP apps anyway, but working on a larger screen with keyboard and mouse beats a smartphone anytime. Except when you're on the go, of course.

Considering the dismal number of affordable Windows 10 Mobile phones in the market, you'd almost presume Windows 10 fans would jump at the opportunity to get a sub-$200 device. But aside from the crowdfunding risk, the distinct lack of tempting features threatening the Moly X1 to fail.

The campaign needs $100,000 to succeed but it has barely raised 2% of that from 12 people. But even should the campaign fail, the company behind Moly X1 will still rake in the pledges, which perhaps is another factor against it. Source: slashgear

Microsoft Windows Phone Could Eliminate Lumia Lineup With Surface

Microsoft has always treated its Windows Phone with many surprises, but now news has surfaced that points to rumors that the company itself is now planning to eliminate some devices with the official retirement of the Lumia lineup.

We recently reported news about the HP Elite X3, and users say it's the best Windows phone to date, and not even a Lumia can match its performance. It's kind of ironic that the number one Windows phone is not manufactured by Microsoft, but Redmond itself said on several occasions that it plans to work with partners on building "great devices."

But despite the HP Elite X3 being a hardware monster, the software side of the device is simply dragging it down, and I'm saying this as a big fan of Windows phones. It's nearly impossible to come from Android or iOS and be happy with Windows phones (although I've personally seen people doing this, but you can count them on the fingers of one hand), and there are three main reasons for this.

Spoiler alert: Windows phone fans aren't going to like this, but as always, head to the comment section if you think I'm wrong. I'm preparing my argument bag as we speak, so let's have a conversation.

    News of Buggy operating system

Windows 10 Mobile phone has improved a lot since the first preview builds were released a long time ago, but after using it for so long on the Lumia 950 XL and then on the HP Elite X3, it's more than obvious that it still has a long way to go before it becomes a strong rival to Android and iOS.

Bugs are still there, and it goes without saying that these easily ruin the experience with a powerful phone like the HP Elite X3. The "Resuming" bug is still there, and so are crashes that occur every once in a while when using various apps.

    HP Elite X3 Review – A Third-Party Surface Phone

Microsoft says on every occasion that it's still committed to Windows 10 Mobile, but the company hasn't released any new device in the last 6 months or so, making everyone believe that it's ready to give up at least on the hardware side of its mobile push.

With rumors that Microsoft is also aiming to abandon the Lumia lineup, every new phone coming from a different company is catching everyone's attention, and this is exactly what happened with the HP Elite X3.

Announced with much fanfare earlier this year, the HP Elite X3 comes with specs that Windows Phone fans have until now only dreamed about, despite the Lumia 950 series, which also brought specs that were compelling to say the least.

But HP's Elite X3 arrives at a time when only few people still believe in Windows phones, so there's no doubt that hardcore fans really need to give it a shot.

That's exactly what we did, as we took the HP Elite X3 for a spin and used it for several weeks, including with Continuum, to see what this is all about. This time, we're going to split the review into two parts, namely hardware and software, so read on to find more about this super-powerful Windows phone.

    Hardware

In terms of hardware, there's no way you're not going to be pleased with the HP Elite X3, although there still are things that would need more improvements. But let's take them one at a time and see what this is all about.

    #Display

The HP Elite X3 comes with a 5.96-inch display that you'll absolutely love. It has a resolution of 1440×2560 pixels, with a pixel density of 494 ppi, and although it looks huge at first, it has major advantages.

With a screen-to-body ratio of 72.2 percent, the phone has plenty of screen space to work with, so it's absolutely a pleasure to browse the web or watch movies.

    "BRILLIANT DISPLAY!"

Colors are vivid, and the contrast is excellent, much better than on the other Windows phones on the market. The phone also comes with features such as double tap to wake, which is kind of handy given its size, but it lacks Glance screen, and this is one very important setback.

It does have a LED notification light to compensate for the lack of Glance, but Windows 10 Mobile does not have advanced support for this feature, so you can't configure it to blink when you have missed third-party notifications just yet.

The response time of the display is impressive to say the least and readability in direct sunlight is a bit above the average.

    #CPU, RAM, and storage

This phone comes with the most powerful Snapdragon processor at the moment, namely the 820, which is quad-core in the following configuration: 2 cores running at 2.15 GHz and 2 running at 1.6 GHz. Depending on the power you need, the more powerful cores kick in, giving the phone impressive performance figures.

The Elite X3 features 4 GB of RAM, which is pretty much the biggest amount of memory that you can find right now in the Windows phone world, and 64 GB of storage, obviously with microSD card support.

The aforementioned configuration makes the HP Elite X3 blazing fast 90 percent of the time, and the remaining 10 percent is lost only because of Windows 10 Mobile.

The phone barely gets hot when performing more demanding tasks, such as when watching videos, but even when it does, the cooling system is super-efficient.

The amount of storage that the device offers is not overwhelming, but it's a good thing that it comes with microSD card support. This is something that Apple should borrow as well, although we all know that's not going to happen.

Microsoft Surface Phone Release Date, Latest News & Updates: Surface Pro 5 Bundle Planed For February 2017?

Little has been known on what Microsoft plans for its Surface Pro line and the word out right now is that the company could be releasing the Surface Pro 5 and the Surface Phone together in early 2017. This has yet to be confirmed by Microsoft but is, by all means, welcome if true.

Both the Microsoft Surface Pro 5 and Surface Phone are devices many are eager to see. Last month, a previous report here on GameNGuide suggested the possibility of seeing the Surface Pro 5 coming out at an event that never transpired. This was a Windows 10 event that included the Surface 4 and the Surface Book.

Now, the claims have shifted to a potential February 2017 release which is unofficial. While it doesn't hurt to expect, this should be by no means taking nothing more than a grain of salt.-

    Surface Pro 5 expectations

With nothing certain, many are eager to see the successor of the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 which has been out for over a year now. The processor to be used is being debated though most are expecting the company to use Intel's latest Kaby Lake processors.

Aside from the processor, most are anticipating the Surface Pro 5 to come out with a Surface Pen, support for USB-C and something that can support 4K or 5K display.

    Surface Phone theories

In another previous post, there were various takes on what Microsoft could do to arm its alleged Surface Phone. Among the speculated features include an OLED screen and something armed with fingerprint security. It could be armed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 chipset (at the least), 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage by default.

The rumored Surface Phone could come out in three variants, the difference of which would be the RAM count and internal storage options. Stay tuned to GameNGuide for the latest updates on Microsoft's Surface devices! To know more about it, watch the video below. Source: gamenguide

Microsoft Surface Phone Claimed to Run on Qualcomm Snapdragon 835

The mysterious Microsoft Surface Phone already achieved legendary status among leaksters and rumor-fiends and today's claim is that the respective device will run on Qualcomm's future Snapdragon 835 system on chip. Truth be told, from what I've researched so far, Microsoft has a pretty interesting plan with regard to our future gadgets, as they're basically trying to take over the world.

After basically destroying Nokia and their line of smartphones, Lumia that is, Microsoft seems to be trying an interesting approach, i.e. to release an uber-smartphone, maybe once a year, something like the aforementioned Microsoft Surface Phone, a powerful device that is aimed at replacing basically all the gadgets around the house: your smartphone, tablet, PC, laptop, camera etc

The idea is that WP 10 comes with that cool Continuum feature, which allows you to transform your smartphone into a PC/laptop of sorts.

You just have to connect it to a TV set together with a keyboard/mouse and there you have it. Currently, the hardware inside a smartphone is not strong enough to be able to really replace a laptop or a PC, but technology is advancing very fast and we're almost there. As far as I can determine, the future Microsoft Surface Phone is supposed to use x86 CPUs, meaning laptop grade stuff, more powerful than the likes of a Snapdragon 835.

However, according to today's report, the Redmond based company is working on two prototypes which are to be released next year, both being powered by the Snapdragon 835 Soc, featuring 4GB/6GB respectively. The 6 GB version will supposedly be able to run x86 applications via the Continuum gizmo I already told you about, while the 4 GB version will stick with the usual.

According to rumors, both versions of the Microsoft Surface Phone will have a 5.5" QHD display and may arrive with laptop accessories, the likes of a keyboard cover like the Surface Pro and a stylus pen.

Report: Microsoft Surface Phone Prototype Runs Snapdragon 835, Supports x86 Apps

Before anything, a small disclaimer: this is just a report for the time being and is based on unknown sources, so there's a good chance that it's not accurate. But given the latest rumors, the details that the report includes pretty much make sense.

Specifically, NPU writes that Microsoft has developed several prototypes for the Surface Phone and all of them are powered by a Snapdragon 835 CPU and come with support for Quick Charge 4.0. This would give the device super-fast charging speeds with a USB Type-C connector. Wireless charging is very likely to be supported as well.

    x86 app support

The source claims that the prototypes are powered by Windows 10 Mobile 64-bit and one of the most powerful comes with 6 GB of RAM, allowing it to run x86 apps in Continuum mode. This aligns with previous rumors that Microsoft might be working on some sort of emulation that would be possible on ARM64, so the software giant might be testing this with a prototype.

For the moment, x86 apps are exclusive to Continuum for this early prototype of the Surface Phone, but users can install them even when not connected to an external screen.

There's also another Surface Phone version with 4 GB of RAM, but this one doesn't support x86 apps at all, not even in Continuum mode. This could be a more affordable version of the phone for consumers, but without x86 support, it would be very similar to the existing Windows phones.

The Surface Phone is likely to come with a 5.5-inch screen and feature a laptop accessory that would thus provide a new form factor to the device. This accessory might only work with the top-of-the-range version aimed at businesses, and not with the 4GB model.

The debut of the phone could take place in late 2017 when Microsoft could also take the wraps off Windows 10 Redstone 3, but neither the Surface Phone nor the OS update was confirmed by the software giant. Source: softpedia

Unlocked HTC 10 will begin receiving Android 7.0 Nougat update on Friday

If you've got an unlocked HTC 10, you'll soon receive a Nougat dessert to follow up your Thanksgiving meal today.

HTC USA today announced that it's finished testing the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the unlocked version of the HTC 10. The update is slated to begin rolling out Friday, November 25.

HTC also updated us on the status of Android 7.0 for the carrier versions of the HTC 10 and HTC One M9. According to HTC, those updates will begin rolling out in early 2017. Updates for carrier variants of phones typically take longer than they do for unlocked phones because the carriers put the updates through extra testing.

When HTC launched the 10, it touted that it "streamlined" its new device by reducing the number of duplicate preloaded apps and bloatware. This also helps HTC to push updates out faster since there's less for the company to customize from Google's flavor of Android. Now owners of the unlocked HTC 10 are reaping this benefit, because they'll get their helping of Android 7.0 Nougat starting tomorrow, before most other Android devices on the market.

Windows 10 Mobile Adoption in the US Well Below Expectations

The United States isn't really Microsoft's most successful market in the mobile business and new statistics coming from AdDuplex confirm it, showing that Windows Phone 8.1 continues to be the more popular choice in Redmond's smartphone ecosystem.

According to these stats, no less than 80 percent of all phones running Microsoft's mobile operating systems are powered by Windows Phone 8.1, while 4.0 percent of them are still on Windows Phone 8.0.

As far as Windows 10 Mobile is concerned, its share is only at 15 percent, and as AdDuplex puts it, "this presents a major obstacle in UWP adoption for mobile-first Windows apps."

In terms of devices, Lumia 640 is currently the leading Windows Phone model with a share of 26.2 percent, followed by Lumia 635 with 22 percent. The Lumia 950 is far behind with 3.8 percent, while the XL is not even in top 10. More interesting is that the HTC One M8 with Windows has a share of 3.4 percent in the US.

Alcatel IDOL 4S already more popular than HP Elite X3

When it comes to Windows 10 Mobile exclusively, Lumia 640 is leading the charts as well, this time with 20.2 percent, while Lumia 950 is runner-up with 19.3 percent. Lumia 950 XL has a share of 6.1 percent and is closely followed by Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL with 5.6 percent.

The new Alcatel IDOL 4S is "at number 16 and it's already ahead of HP's Elite X3 (position 19), after just a week on the market. Though this could be a splash from the new phone setup activity. We should if it progresses up the chart next month," AdDuplex says.

And last but not least, Microsoft continues to be the top Windows 10 Mobile manufacturer in the United States with 89.4 percent, while Alcatel has already snatched the second position with 6.2 percent. HTC is third with 3.4 percent, and BLU comes next with 0.5 percent. Source: softpedia

Microsoft News & Updates: Specs, Features, Windows Surface Phone 2017 and Surface Pro 5 To Be Released in Feb 2017

It is rumored that Windows Surface phone will be released in 2017. This is going to be a big leap from the last Windows 10 phone release. The Windows Surface Phone will be based on the old Lumia handsets. The rebranded phones will retain Lumia features such as ClearBlack screens as well as Glance and others.

Also expected to be released with the Windows Surface phone is the improved Microsoft Surface Pro 5 tablet-laptop hybrid. Windows has put a lot of effort into the Surface hybrid series. The Microsoft Surface Pro 5 is expected to pack more features, especially since it will be using Windows 10 and coming on the heels of the Surface Studio.

Newseveryday mentioned that these both devices Windows Surface phone and Microsoft Surface Pro 5 will be announced during the 2017 Mobile World Congress. In the meantime, the company is busy with upgrades to the current Surface Pro 4. Some may see this as a confusing signal, because it does not make sense to upgrade the current crop of product, if the new one will be released soon.

Windows phones have had a history of flat sales since it was first released. It has not made any dent in smartphone sales in terms of volume or in revenue. It has been reported that the total market share of all phones running Microsoft Windows is at 1%. If the new release proves a success, these numbers might increase a little bit.

Windows 10 Mobile might be able to emulate x86 apps

Windows 10's Continuum for Phones feature promises us a rather colorful future of computing, but it falls short in one critical aspect. It can't run the desktop apps that majority of users expect and still use on their desktops. That, however, might change by late 2017.

A combination of speculation and sources would have us believe that Microsoft might be rolling out its x86 emulation for ARM64 systems. In a nutshell, that means that Windows 10 Mobile phones and tablet might gain the ability to run "regular" win32 desktop apps by then.

The limitations imposed by Windows 10 Mobile on Continuum is both technical and arbitrary. On the one hand, Microsoft will naturally prefer users to switch to apps using its Universal Windows Platform (UWP), which are the only types of apps that can run in Continuum mode.

At the same time, Windows 10 Mobile devices run on ARM-based processors, which aren't directly compatible with x86 software, what Microsoft calls the legacy win32 apps. There are two possible solutions to this. One is write apps, whether using UWP or not, that can be easily ported from x86 to ARM.

There are quite a number of frameworks that allow that. The easier, but less efficient, solution would be to emulate the x86 platform on ARM, introducing a compatibility layer that would allow x86 software to run on ARM. Most of the time, however, it's the reverse, with emulators running ARM software on x86.

HP is preparing to launch a new Windows 10 phone in early 2017

#HP #WindowsPhone – HP is preparing to launch a new Windows 10 phone in early 2017 : After Microsoft announced the discontinuation of their Lumia phones with a heavy heart, the company has since been collaborating with third-party firms in hopes of reviving the Windows 10 Mobile ecosystem again.

We will continue to support and update the Lumia devices that are currently in the market, and the development of Windows 10 phones by OEMs, such as HP, Acer, Alcatel, VAIO, and Trinity; as well as develop great new devices.

This time, HP has stepped up and taken it upon themselves to launch a next-generation Windows powered, consumer phone by February 2017. While Windows users were anxiously waiting for some news regarding the release of a Surface Phone from Microsoft's side, HP emerged as a savior.

The company will ostensibly cover the majority of the workload, which includes the manufacture and sale of the upcoming handset, while Microsoft is left with taking responsibility for investing in the product development.

So, any residual hopes of an upcoming Surface Phone are long gone. But considering the massive applause HP's Elite X3 received, HP taking the steering wheel for this might actually prove to be beneficial.

Although the Elite X3 is a business targeted phone, details from German site Dr. Windows report that HP is working with Microsoft on a Windows 10 Mobile device that's specifically aimed at consumers.

Details on the device are pretty lean at the moment, but the phone is rumored to be immensely inspired by the design and specifications of Microsoft's Lumia phones, inheriting features like ClearBlack screens, Glance, double tap to wake and more, all of which previously existed in Lumia devices.

Given the limited expertise HP has as a smartphone manufacturer, taking incentive from the professionals in the domain would be a smart move. The upcoming device could very well be called a successor to HP Elite X3, which was announced last February.

Predicting the hardware specs of the upcoming HP consumer phone, it is going to be a guaranteed upgrade from their Elite X3 that uses a Snapdragon 820 processor and 4 GB of RAM, so we can expect improved and advanced internals conceivably including a Snapdragon 835 and 6 GB of RAM.

Although the posh price tag labeled on Elite X3 devices kept away most consumers and marked it as a business phone, the HP/Microsoft collaboration is certainly aiming to change that with their new project.

Given the hard time Microsoft has been facing lately in the smartphone domain, the alliance is undoubtedly a blessing in disguise for the company. Source:windowsreport

Can Microsoft’s Upcoming Phone Help Windows Phone OS Rise From the Ashes?

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has been struggling with its Windows phone for a very long time. It made several failed efforts to grab a sizable chunk of the smartphone market by riding on the back of its flagship devices like Nokia Lumia series and the latest HP Elite X3. However, Android and iOS devices continue to rule the market. According to the latest rumour, HP and Microsoft are one again gearing up to launch a Windows 10 powered smartphone in early 2017. The device is rumoured to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2017 as a successor of HP Elite X3.

The specifications of the device are unknown. Given the fact that both Microsoft and HP need to make a mark in the market, we can expect interesting and attractive upgrades in the device. The Elite X3 hosts Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 with 4GB RAM, 64GB storage and a 16-megapixel camera which means we can expect more advanced Snapdragon 835, 6-8 GB RAM, different storage capacity versions and a better camera quality in the upcoming version. But hardware specifications are not the primary reason behind the disappointing performance of Windows Phones in the market. Windows mobiles are failing to make a mark because of its OS – Windows Phone OS.

    Windows Phone OS Failure

Microsoft's Windows Phone OS have always failed to provide its users with a great experience. To provide a unified and seamlessly integrated experience between mobile and desktop the company is powering all mobile devices with Windows 10 OS. The interface, however, fails to attract the mobile users. It lacks many convenient features, such as control centre, which provides access to general settings and controls. On the other side, these features are frequently used and are offered by Android and iOS.

Besides, Windows Phone Store is pretty disappointing for its users. The app store lacks many popular games and apps. As it fails to attract app developers, most of the apps are either not upgraded regularly or are not introduced on the Windows Phone OS platform. This is resulting in a great disappointment for Windows mobile users, especially when they see their peers on Android or iOS platform enjoying the latest features of apps. Undoubtedly, Windows will need to work on providing an unmatched user experience to win the lost and new customers. However, it is going to be a tough call for Windows phones to beat Android and iOS.

Microsoft Lost the Smartphone OS Market

The smartphone operating system market has become highly competitive. Android leads the OS market with the maximum market share. As of Q3 2016, Windows Phone OS market share touched a mere 0.4% compared to iOS' 11.5% and Android's 87.8%. Microsoft revealed that the revenue from phones has decreased by $4.2 billion (56%) in the fiscal year 2016, thanks to the falling sales of Windows Lumia Phones. The sales of Lumia devices went down by almost 60% within a year, to 13.8 million units in fiscal 2016 from 36.8 million units in the fiscal year 2015.

Microsoft Windows Phone sales Q2 2016

When the sales/revenue of a product/brand falls at such a high rate, it means that the consumers are changing their track towards a better option available in the market. However, Microsoft and HP are still not ready to give up.

    What's Wrong With Microsoft?

If we consider the brilliant features and design introduced in Surface Pro 4 by Microsoft, it gives us a reason to believe that Microsoft still has the potential to think and develop great mobile devices and software for an unmatched experience. However, the company is trying to kill two birds with one stone – which has never been fruitful for any company in the past. Apple and Google both tried to follow the same model but failed, and later decided to power Desktop and Mobile Environment with two separate operative systems. The reason is simple, mobile and desktop are two different ecosystems altogether, and users behaviour on one ecosystem is quite different compared to the other one.

With the current scenario and past performances, however, it is highly doubtful that the successor of Elite X3 will be a hit in the market, until and unless it offers something unique and unprecedented experience. Android and iOS are loaded with tons of features and the customers are having a tough time choosing between them, leave alone Windows. The problem is not that the consumers do not need a Windows phone, but Microsoft has mismanaged it badly. The inconsistent third-party support, distribution chaos and unavailability of apps have been disappointing users for long and making them shy away from Windows Phones. It seems like Microsoft doesn't believe in itself because of its changing strategies and lurching behaviour.

While we are doubtful of the fate of the upcoming Windows device, let's just wait for the device to launch. You never know what Satya Nadella has got in its kitty to surprise us all!

Microsoft Surface Phone 2017 release date: New device to arrive alongside Surface Pro 5 next year? : The much rumored Microsoft Surface Phone 2017 release may finally happen next year. The Redmond-based tech giant may unveil the new smartphone alongside the Microsoft Surface Pro 5 in February.

Reliable German Windows-centric website Dr Windows reported that it has received "concrete evidence" that HP is working in partnership with Microsoft in making a powerful Windows 10 smartphone.

The website also said that the new Microsoft Surface Phone is the rebranded Lumia handsets and will come with Lumia's best features such as ClearBlack screens, Glance and more.

There are reports claiming that Microsoft announced a smartphone internally that is to be released in February 2017. This has sparked rumors that the smartphone will be released alongside the Microsoft Surface Pro 5 tablet-laptop hybrid.

it is also being speculated that the two new devices may be announced at the Mobile World Congress 2017 or at a different event.

Microsoft very recently announced the new Surface Studio and Surface Book i7 at the Windows 10 event on Oct. 27 expanding its Surface family.

Microsoft Surface Phone 2017 release in February 2017; smartphone by HP with Lumia features

Microsoft Surface Phone 2017 release is reportedly in February 2017 as the smartphone is currently in the works. The new smartphone will pack amazing and powerful features found in Lumia handsets.

Reliable German Windows-centric website Dr Windows revealed that it has received "concrete evidence" that HP is working in partnership with Microsoft in making a powerful Windows 10 smartphone.

The website added that the new Microsoft Surface Phone is the rebranded Lumia handsets as it will inherit Lumia's best features such as ClearBlack screens, Glance and more. However, the details of the smartphone are still under wraps.

The new smartphone will reportedly run with Windows 10 mobile OS giving it some laptop capabilities. Titled "Creative Update", this next update is scheduled to launch in early 2017 and will focus on productivity and creativity improvements for the desktop, and will bring much-needed features and enhancements to Windows 10 Mobile Continuum users.

The release of the Windows 10 mobile OS further supports the rumors the Microsoft Surface Phone 2017 release early next year. There are rumors that Microsoft announced a smartphone internally that is for release in February 2017.

This fueled the rumors that the smartphone will be released alongside the popular Microsoft Surface Pro 5 tablet-laptop hybrid. Meanwhile, Microsoft Surface Pro 5 went missing in action at the recent Windows event and rumors are rife that the laptop-tablet hybrid will be released in February 2017.

Microsoft just announced the new Surface Studio and Surface Book i7 as new members of the Surface family. It is most probably that Microsoft delayed the release of Surface Pro 5 to avoid stealing the spotlight of the new devices and the media and consumers will focus on the features they offer.

Moreover, holding back the Pro 5 will prevent it from cannibalizing the sales of the new Surfaces. There is no official announcement from Microsoft yet. Source: yibada

Apple To Fix Touch Disease on iPhone 6 plus

Apple To Fix Touch Disease on iPhone 6 plus

Apple is recognizing that "Touch Disease" is a thing. The tech company is rolling out a repair program to fix iPhone 6 Plus devices with unresponsive touchscreen features. The term "Touch Disease" refers to the touchscreen issues that surface after the phone undergoes stress, like being dropped on the floor several times. In many cases, iPhone users have complained the touchscreen will entirely stop working for several months.

In August, repair site iFixit discovered that the issue stemmed from faulty chips inside the devices. When the phone is dropped or bent, the chips become loose. At the time, iFixit called the issue "Touch Disease" — and it was quickly adopted by the internet.

Now, the company is willing to repair affected devices for $149 — as long as your screen isn't cracked and the phone is in working order.

Apple said on its website it "determined that some iPhone 6 Plus devices may exhibit display flickering or multi-touch issues after being dropped multiple times on a hard surface and then incurring further stress on the device."

Although some iPhone 6 users have also reported the issue, Apple's fix only applies to the larger-sized iPhone 6 Plus.

The company added it will reimburse people if they already fixed devices through Apple service providers for more than $149.

Following widespread reports of the problem, "Touch Disease" — on both sizes of the iPhone 6 — has accounted for up to 22% of repairs at Apple Stores, according to tech site Apple Insider.

HP working with Microsoft to Launch a New Windows Phone in 2017

HP and Microsoft are supposedly working together to launch a Windows smartphone in 2017. As per Phone Arena, the duo has joined hands to release a more customer-focused Windows Phone probably in February 2017.

The upcoming Windows handset will be a budget handset catering the needs of consumers looking for an affordable Windows smartphone.

    HP and Microsoft's role

As per reports, HP will take care of the manufacturing and sales, while Microsoft will offer the financial support for the same. Now when Microsoft is in the picture, we can expect the upcoming handset carrying features matching the likes of Lumia smartphones, which have now become a thing of past.

    HP's second Attempt

It is worth mentioning that HP's last Windows attempt- the HP Elite X3 failed to woo the consumers. That said, HP must be extra careful this time to make the upcoming handset a success.

    Expected Features

If reports are to be believed, features like Glance, ClearBlack display, double tap to wake, and advanced camera functionality will be implemented in the HP's Windows Phone handset. We might see a dedicated camera app matching the likes of Lumia's camera in the HP handset.

    Microsoft's Redmond

The reports further mentioned that Microsoft's new Windows 10 Mobile handset Redmond is already out and is expected to be officially announced in February 2017.

Windows mobile OS is here to stay

While Android and iOS are known for their major market share in smartphone industry, Windows mobile OS still has a huge fan following who would love to see and buy a new Windows handset. HP and Microsoft will aim to target such audience and the affordable price tag can come as a neat trick to lure first time Windows buyers as well.

It's too early to talk about the figures, but an affordable feature loaded Windows phone can fill the gap after Microsoft declared that it is killing the Lumia range of handsets in September 2016.

Lumia 950 XL, HP Elite x3 Black Friday bundle deals at the Microsoft Store

#Lumia950XL #HPElitex3 – Lumia 950 XL, HP Elite x3 Black Friday bundle deals at the Microsoft Store : Earlier today, we reported that the US Microsoft Store had just set up a dedicated page for the upcoming Black Friday Deals that will be available to consumers starting November 24.

Looking at the details, we saw that two offers on the Lumia 950 XL (currently priced at $499) and the HP Elite x3 (currently priced at $799, with a Desk Dock) were quite confusing as the Microsoft Store doesn't provide as much details as for the other discounted products right now.

We've reached the Microsoft Store to learn more details on these discounts and here is what a Microsoft Store spokesperson answered us:

  • Starting November 24, purchasing the $499 Lumia 950 XL will get you a free unlocked Lumia 950 ($379.05 value) plus a free Microsoft Display Dock ($99 value).
  • On this same day, the Microsoft Store will start selling a $1,148 HP Elite x3 Bundle featuring the handset ($799 value), the HP Laptop Dock ($599 value), a free silicon case and a free screen protector.
  • Earlier in April, the Microsoft Store also offered for a limited time a free Lumia 950 with a Lumia 950XL purchase in the US and Canada, though this previous offer did not include a free Display Dock as well.

As for the offer on the HP Elite x3 bundle, the free Laptop Dock really seems to be great value as this expensive accessory does enable the use of Continuum in a true mobile setting, transforming the Windows 10 Mobile handset in a lightweight notebook. Sound off in the comments if you're looking forward to take advantage of these offers starting November 24. Source: winbeta

German Police Considering Move to Windows Phones to Fight Traffic Jams

#GermanPolice #SurfacePhone – German Police Considering Move to Windows Phones to Fight Traffic Jams : Specifically, the police of Saarland want to adopt Windows phones and Surface tablets to improve the process of recording traffic accidents, as everything could be performed digitally wherever they are.

Microsoft Germany, who is closely working with the Saarland police, says officers can submit accident data and attach photos or notes using applications that are specifically developed to run on Windows phones and Surface tablets.

The German police think that by recording accident information faster than before, officers can also reduce the amount of time that leads to traffic jams caused by accidents, and thus improve traffic in the affected areas. The pilot program is already showing positive signs, and an agreement between Microsoft and police is very likely.

"Police receiving HP Elite X3 phones"

As part of the testing effort that debuted in September, over a third of all accidents were recorded digitally, Microsoft says, and statistics show that traffic congestion has been reduced significantly because of the digital processing of all information.

Microsoft hasn't revealed the models that police are evaluating, but German sources claim it's the HP Elite X3, which is quite a productivity workhorse that could certainly meet all the expectations when it comes to traffic reporting.

It goes without saying that such news is welcome in the Windows phone community, especially because the platform is going through some very hard times, with developers and users alike leaving for Android and iOS.

Microsoft, on the other hand, is focusing more on businesses, so a deal with the German police seems to perfectly align with this plan. Obviously, it takes more than just a deal to make Windows phones more widely adopted across the world, but it's definitely an important step in the right direction. Source: softpedia

WhatsApp rolls out video calling for iOS, Android and Windows Phone

Facebook's WhatsApp messaging service updated to include video calling across multiple platforms to users around the world.

The Facebook-owned WhatsApp looks to further their communication options by adding video calling. On November 14, 2016, the app began to roll out the new video chat feature, adding to the current services available, such as voice calling, messaging, and group chat. WhatsApp hopes to stand out by emphasizing on cross-platform use on a global scale, going far beyond other popular video calling applications, such as Apple's FaceTime.

In a blog announcement, WhatsApp says, "Today we're excited to announce the next step in our efforts to connect people – WhatsApp video calling. In the coming days, WhatsApp's more than one billion users can make video calls across Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone devices." WhatsApp looks to become more on par with other messaging applications, such as their sister app, Facebook Messenger, and their lead competitors, like Viber, Google Hangouts/Duo, and Skype.

WhatsApp's competitor, Microsoft also made the announcement on November 14th that Skype could now be used online without registration, granting users to access a guest account for video-conferencing via its web application.

WhatsApp's implementation of visual communications follows the introduction of voice calling within the app, which first rolled out in April 2015. After several months of beta testing, WhatsApp plans to release the video calling feature within the next few days.

With the update, there are a few small changes to the user interface. The icon at the top right corner of the chat provides the user the option to either make a voice or video call. Video Call will start a video chat when it is selected. However, if the app has not been updated, then it will simply default to voice calling. The video chat is designed with simplicity in mind, with the option of front- and rear-facing camera, a mute button, and a red phone icon to end the call.

Facebook first announced the acquisition of WhatsApp in February 2014 for 19 Billion USD. Since then, the app has been consistently updated to compete with the leaders of the market, such as Skype. As stated in their blog post, WhatsApp wishes to make the app available through as many platforms, in as many places as possible. "There's no substitute for watching your grandchild take her first steps, or seeing your daughter's face while she's studying abroad. And we want to make these features available to everyone, not just those who can afford the most expensive new phones or live in countries with the best cellular networks."

Nostradamus, what do you see in 2017?

Facebook and Apple will start buying sports and movie rights. The internet startup bubble will burst. And lots of people will buy a Nokia phone. What do you reckon?

Yes, it's that time of the year when CCS Insight goes all Nostradamus on us, picking key technology and telecomms trends for the year (and years) ahead. As ever, out of hundreds there are some shrewd picks and some bold ones, and mobile expert Ben Wood guided us through five. Same format as last year.

    Hello again, Nokia

Prediction: Nokia-branded Android smartphones grab 5 percent global market share by 2019. The Nokia name has returned to the phone market through a brand licensing deal with HMD global. The enduring appeal of the once-dominant brand fuels strong sales in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. At more than 80 million units, shipments in 2019 are more than double those of Lumia Windows phones at their annual height in 2014.

Wood: "There's a lot of legs in the Nokia brand, still. It's not for the cool kids or the Millenials, but people who just need a reliable middle of the roader. This is a scale game, and if HMD can scale very rapidly, they're in with a chance. We're already seeing a component squeeze on smaller manufacturers, which are subscale."

Self-driving cars? Keep waiting. And waiting

Noddy Car photo © Jeremy Tarling

Prediction: Autonomous cars with no human driver remain a research project until at least 2025. Despite extensive hype, the problems of legislation, regulation, safety and consumer acceptance mean fully software-controlled cars on public roads stay in the realms of science fiction until well into the next decade. Self-driving technology continues to make progress through driver-assistance projects like Tesla's Autopilot, but regulatory approval advances far more slowly than the technology.

    Wood: "They're years away."

Prediction: In 2018, smart sports shoes sell 1 million pairs to become the first mass-market smart clothing. Premium sports brands include sensors in their high-end footwear ranges that measure wearers' activity and performance. Sales rapidly increase to reach 5 million pairs in 2020.

WhatsApp video calls are now official, coming this week to all users

WhatsApp video calls started showing up for some users last month, but you either had them enabled on your device or you had to use root to trigger them. Otherwise, you couldn't do anything but wait until the feature went official. And now is the time.

WhatsApp has announced that video calls are going live for users across Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone devices. The rollout might take a couple of days, so be patient if the feature doesn't seem live to you just yet.

    whatsapp

So how do you place a video call? When you tap the call button in any chat or any contact screen, you'll see two options for voice and video calls. There aren't many buttons inside the video call screen. You can hang up, switch the camera from the front one to the rear in case you want to share what you're seeing right now, mute, and switch to the text chat if you need to type something. And with WhatsApp's penetration rate, it doesn't need to do much more to attract users — they're already there.

As we said, if the feature isn't live already on your device, be patient. It might require a small app update or a server-side switch. It doesn't hurt to join the beta and make sure you're on the latest version.

WhatsApp Adds Video Calling to iOS, Android and Windows Phones

    Nov. 15, 2016 12:47 a.m. ET

WhatsApp, the massively popular messaging app owned by Facebook Inc., is adding video calling to its smartphone app across three operating systems: Apple Inc.'s iOS, Alphabet Inc.'s Android and Microsoft Corp.'s Windows smartphone OS.

With cross-platform video chatting in place, WhatsApp is offering a combination of video and text messages in one app, similar to what is found in Microsoft's Skype, Snap Inc.'s Snapchat and Facebook Messenger. Chatters won't have to wonder what OS their friends are on when they go to chat face to face. (The software also competes with Apple's proprietary FaceTime and Google's Duo app for iOS and Android.)

The launch Tuesday—in an app update for iOS 8 or newer, Android 4.1 or newer and both Windows 10 Mobile and Windows Phone 8.1—will bring video calling to over 1 billion WhatsApp users across more than 180 countries on the same day, said Manpreet Singh, WhatsApp's lead engineer.

Like Apple's FaceTim e and iMessage apps, WhatsApp offers a security feature called end-to-end encryption that's turned on by default for text, voice and now video messaging. End-to-end encryption means the transmission is encrypted even on WhatsApp's own servers, so it would be equally obscured from hackers and government agencies, and would be hard for WhatsApp to divulge, even with a court order.

Online privacy experts consider WhatsApp's choice of encryption technology to be among the best available. It's also what took WhatsApp, which made its text-messaging debut six years ago, so long. Many rivals only offer encryption as a limited option. "It's harder to build something that's on for everyone all at once," Mr. Singh said.

While privacy is a highly touted value for WhatsApp, the messaging service shares some user data—such as the phone number tied to your user account—with its parent company, Facebook. With end-to-end encryption, however, neither WhatsApp nor Fac ebook can see any content from messages and video calls, Mr. Singh said.

WhatsApp's Windows 10 PC and Mac OS X desktop apps won't be getting video calling at launch, but it could come later, Mr. Singh said.

Magic vs. Pacers Live Stream: How to Watch Online

    Serge Ibaka Kings vs. Magic

One night after beating the Thunder in Oklahoma City, the Orlando Magic are back in action as they face the Indiana Pacers at 7:00 p.m. Monday. Looking for a way to watch the Magic-Pacers game online if you don't have a cable or satellite subscription? Here's how you can do that.

If You Don't Have Cable Outside the Indiana and Orlando TV Markets

If you're not in the Indiana or Orlando markets, you can watch via NBA League Pass, which has plans ranging from a one-game pass to a season-long all-access pass that will give you access to every out-of-market game all season.

There are two ways to buy League Pass: Through the NBA's website or app, and through Verizon's go90 app, which provides mobile streaming of every League Pass game for half the price of the regular League Pass all-access subscription. The all-access pass through go90 is free if you're a Verizon customer with access to the company's Streampass service, which is complimentary with large data plans.

If you buy a League Pass subscription through the NBA, you can watch on a smart phone, tablet, computer or connected TV. The following options are available:

  •  A one-game pass for $6.99. This will allow you to watch tonight's game only.
  •  A team pass for $119.99. This will give you access to every out-of-market game for one team.
  •  An all-access league pass for $199.99. This will give you access to every out-of-market game for the whole league.
  • Click here to sign up for League Pass through NBA.com.

Click here to download the NBA app in the iTunes App Store.

Click here to download the NBA app in the Google Play Store.

Click here to download the NBA app via Amazon.

You can also access the NBA app on an Apple TV, Samsung Smart TV, Amazon Fire tablet, Amazon Fire FV, Amazon Fire FV Stick, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita or Roku.

If you're in the United States and looking to save some money on the all-access pass, you might want to consider buying League Pass through go90. The service streams every out-of-market game on mobile devices for just $99.50, half the price of the all-access pass available through NBA.com. The downside is that go90 streaming is only available on mobile devices. (If you have a connected TV that enables mirroring with smart phones, you'll have the option of casting the game onto your TV through your phone.) The upside is as follows:

  • Regardless of whether Verizon is your wireless carrier, you can buy League Pass on mobile for $99.50.
  • If you're a Verizon wireless customer with a large data plan, you can watch every out-of-market game on go90 for free, so long as you're registered with StreamPass.
  • If you're a Verizon wireless customer, regardless of the data plan you have, you can stream League Pass games on go90 without using any of your data.
  • Click here to buy League Pass through go90, and click here to download the go90 app.

If you're interested in testing out League Pass on go90 for free, you can do so on November 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 or 20.

Reliance Jio SIM on Lumia / Windows Phone: How To activate & What works? | GoX

Reliance Jio SIM is much desirable today for smartphone users because of its free voice calls and very cheap data offer. What it requires however is a "true" 4G smartphone with VOLTE support.

In this tutorial we tell you how to get Reliance Jio SIM activated on Lumia / Windows Phone / Windows 10 Mobile devices and what actually works?

    What works, what doesn't:

Voice calls are not supported yet on Lumia devices with Reliance Jio SIM. You would be able to use the data however. Reliance Jio uses VOLTE feature for voice calls. Microsoft has also not activated the VOLTE feature in India on 4G capable Lumia devices. VOLTE feature is already available on some of the new Lumia devices in other markets like US.

Another issue is unavailability of Jio apps in Windows Phone store which makes it impossible to call even using the Jio Voice app.

    Which Lumia devices are supported:
  • Lumia 950
  • Lumia 640 LTE
  • Lumia 950XL
  • Lumia 640 XL LTE
  • Lumia 550
  • Lumia 735
  • Lumia 830
