Microsoft Surface phone is apparently ready for trial

Rumours about Microsoft Surface Phone have been floating for a very long time and so far we only have rumours. Today, we have one more. While previous rumours suggested that we may not see a Surface Phone any time soon, it is probably closer than most people think, at least according to a report by Chinese financial publication Commercial Times,

The Commercial Times of Taiwan reports that Chinese ODM Pegatron, which produces the iPhone and also the Surface Studio, is currently running production trials on the mythical Surface Phone.

That handset, which is expected some time in 2017 or early 2018, is expected to include features which sets it apart from other smartphones, such as being able to run x86 apps on Continuum mode.

No other information has been given and this hasn't been confirmed one way or the other from Microsoft (seriously, when do they ever confirm anything?) but with the new phone expected to release sometime in 2017, it would make sense that trial productions would begin soon. Although, if you haven't heard of the Surface Phone before, Microsoft hasn't even confirmed or denied the existence of such a device either, let alone rumours regarding the same. Although rumours have persisted that the device has been in some sort of pre-production throughout 2016.

Satya Nadella, Microsoft's chief executive, has also intimated the idea of a Surface Phone that doesn't mirror smartphone trends of late, "We will continue to be in the phone market not as defined by today's market leaders, but by what it is that we can uniquely do in what is the most ultimate mobile device," Nadella told the Australian Financial Review.

The term "ultimate mobile device" renders the Surface Phone quite ripe for speculation. Exactly what will set the Surface Phone apart from the abundance of smartphone today other than the aforementioned features remains nebulous, but Nadella has confirmed that Microsoft is currently conducting innovative research that will suture its wounded smartphone efforts and subsequently reclaim its presence in the smartphone market.

Some other recent rumours about the smartphone's specs have talked about a Snapdragon 835 chip being at the core of the device, with 6GB and 4GB RAM variants, and a 5.5 inch QHD display. Apparently Continuum will only run on the 6GB RAM variant.

Do you think the Surface Phone is real? What would you want from it, that'll make you switch from an iPhone or Android?
