Almost a quarter of the smartphones selling in India fall in the sub-Rs 6,000 category. And this is a good enough reason for a US company to launch affordable smartphones in India. And Miami-based Blu, has found a niche with both of its new smartphones running Windows Phone.

BLU WIN JR LTE

Blu Win JR LTE is another budget smartphone, but the big differentiators here being that it is a Windows Phone with 4G. The Win JR LTE runs Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 and is powered by a Qualcomm processor. Blu Win JR LTE comes in five different colour variants which will appeal to young audience and remind the older generation about Nokia's Lumia.

What is good?

The first good thing about this device is that it runs Windows Phone 8.1 and not Android like most other devices that have flooded the market. The OS is very smooth to use and the live tiles feature works extremely well. With Update 2, you get the option to arrange your icons in small, wide or large tiles format.

The display has a relatively low FWVGA resolution, but it still has decent brightness. Thanks to Windows Phone's native coloured background, the display doesn't seem to be a huge disappointment.

Another native goodness of Windows Phone gets a mention here. The battery lasts easily for a day. Considering that Windows Phone doesn't consume much battery resources, the Li-Ion 2,000mAh battery sees you through at least half a day with 4G LTE connection and use of web-based apps.

What is not good?

The camera is the biggest disappointment. While it is fast to snap pictures but the 5MP photos captured at 2592 x 1936 pixels look bad in front of 13MP 4128 x 3096 pixels. The pictures clicked look good on the phone screen but falls behind peers when viewed on a big screen.

Another problem I noticed was with network reception. While most phones caught Vodafone signal in my apartment, this phone struggled too much. I had drop calls almost every day.

Should you buy?

At an asking price of Rs 5,999 this phone is too hard to recommend. The budget Android phones like Micromax Canvas Xpress 2 (read our review here) have improved in the past few month by offering very good hardware and latest Android OS. Also, Microsoft's Lumia smartphones (Lumia 532) in this range are dominant choice with assured upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile immediately.
