Windows 10 sees big jump to overtake Windows XP

That means it will automatically download and attempt to install for many, and likely even most, users.

Windows 10, the latest operating system from the firm promises to be a game-changer as it has all the makings of a product that can help Microsoft maintain its lead in the global OS race.

But while Microsoft is very keen on keeping Windows Phone alive, BlackBerry keeps trying to find its identity, and after developing a very stable, secure and reliable BB OS 10, the company is now heading towards Android at full speed.

Certainly, a manufacturer like BlackBerry joining the Windows Phone effort would really be helpful for the future of the platform, but it's no surprise that the company is more interested in Android, given the lack of apps that also impacts Microsoft's operating system.

The setup experience, for example, is just the same as before, and when you upgrade to a new build, you are provided with the same screen and rotating gears, although Microsoft has already implemented a new screen in the PC version of Windows 10. Of course, many users may click this without giving it a second thought and won't realize the effect until the computer's operating system has been completely overhauled. That's not too surprising, considering it gave Windows 10 away to folks running Windows 7 and 8/8.1 Home or Pro, and I would assume most people running Windows 8 would be more than happy to jump forward.

However, it's worth noting that the complete download of Windows 10 will take up between 3.5GB and 6GB of storage space on user hard drives, meaning it's important users who are set for an upgrade ensure they have enough internet data to facilitate the download.

According to Microsoft, if a user confirms the Windows 10 update, they will have 30 days to roll it back to Windows 7 or 8.1 which should put things back to the way they were before with all files and settings intact. The reason is two-fold: one is that there is a chance something could go wrong with the upgrade, leaving you with an unbootable system.

If you don't want to download Windows 10, or you have a metered broadband connection and don't want to waste your data allowance on it, then the only way to opt out of the download is to disable automatic Windows updates.

You never requested it, so why are you getting it?

A Microsoft spokesperson told The Verge that the company is "committed to making it easy for our Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 customers to upgrade to Windows 10". Microsoft is now reclassifying Windows 10 as "recommended" rather than "optional".
