But it appears this time round, Xbox are hoping to bring fresh hardware capabilities to their console, changing the way fans will enjoy their aging devices and games collection.
The company held a major showcase in San Francisco last week to demonstrate their plans for a connected gaming ecosystem across Xbox One and PCs with Windows 10.
However, in order to achieve visual parity between the two platforms, Spencer explained consoles could and should be upgradable to keep up with PC, which may lead to doing away with the generational shifts of consoles. "We're allowing ourselves to decouple our software platform from the hardware platform on which it runs", Spencer said.
Of course, if you have a Windows phone, this functionality has been enabled for several months but now we are seeing the first signs that this functionality is coming to those of you who use an Android device.
Spencer specifically said that we'd see Microsoft "come out with new hardware capa bility during a [console] generation", though when we spoke one-on-one later he was a bit more cagey about what those capabilities might be.
With Microsoft's drive to marry its ecosystems - with "Universal Windows Applications" running on the "Universal Windows Platform" - Microsoft can "focus more on hardware innovations without invalidating the games that run on that platform".
Phil Spencer discusses the struggle to unify Xbox and PC. If owners would have to install hardware upgrades themselves, that would add a layer of complexity that console owners have never had to deal with before. And since there's no viable way to air this all to Microsoft, unhappy customers are hilariously using Steam forums to ask questions and, get this, even receive answers back regarding the Windows Store format. Will the next Xbox be modular to support these upgrades? Microsoft beat Apple to the punch past year on this front and today Microsoft has published a series of videos promoting de sktop features that Mac's are behind in delivering and they gently knock Apple for not having these advancements. We'll have to wait and see.
On PC, you can still play games made many years ago, because the basic architecture of the system has remained the same.
