Windows 10 update will bring smartphone notification mirroring

IDC analyst Al Hilwa sees Microsoft trying to make its tools for developers work the way Office does for knowledge workers. Microsoft revealed this news at its yearly developer event Build 2016.

A new update for Android, iOS and Windows Phone allow users to compare their fitness processes with friends who use the same Health app. It includes data such as burned calories, physical activity, running distances, cardio minutes and bike rides.

Windows Insiders will soon be able to try out a new Start Menu when preview builds of Windows 10 Anniversary Update begin to roll out.

The first will be the ability to project your phone screen and use Continuum on any Windows 10 device that is Miracast compatible and has Wi-Fi connectivity.

Bringing the two organizations together adds cross-platform UI tooling to Microsoft's developer platform, along with the compilers needed to deliver native code to mobile devices.

That 2014 announcement resulted in Xamarin's tools being included in the Visual Studio 2015 installer, but even so, the Xamarin licenses for all but basic apps were still an additional fee, and certainly very high for independent developers or small businesses.

As part of this improvement, we've also made it easier and more clear how to switch between the "Pinned Tiles" and "All apps" views by adopting the navigation pane pattern used throughout Windows. In its fourth quarter earnings report in January, Microsoft reported a smartphone platform deeply in decline. It's still a work in progress and Microsoft is encouraging users to weigh in.

Xamarin started in 2011 and grew to more than 350 customers (simply called Xamarins), the company's chief executive, Nat Friedman, wrote in a blog post. The change will allow people to sign into websites and apps with Windows Hello so they don't have to use passwords.
