Windows 10 now runs on 300 million active devices globally

Windows 10 already boasts an impressive 300 million active devices, but expect that number to skyrocket as the cut-off date looms closer.

As per Microsoft, Windows 10 will also be the last operating system version from Microsoft and will feature periodic upgrades from time to time which will be available for free to all users. The first major release - the Windows 10 Anniversary Update - is slated for launch this winter.

If you are yet to avail the free upgrade to Windows 10 then you should hurry as the promotion will expire on July 29.

In a blog post on Friday, Microsoft said upgrading to Windows 10 would cost US$119 once the free promotion ends. Now that Windows 10 Pro lacks the Windows Store-blocking functionality, the OS places SMBs at greater risk of users obtaining and using unsanctioned software and cloud services, setting the stage for data leaks and compliance violations.

The disabling of the Windows Store's padlock feature nudges small and mid-size business owners to upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise from Pro and it pushes private school administrators to the Education edition.

Microsoft has removed an app from its Windows Store that tried to install adware on Windows 10 computers. The deal is ongoing right now so if you are interested in getting yourself the Windows 10 powered device, this is the time to do so.

Microsoft hasn't done a lot to support Windows phone recently, choosing instead to focus on the desktop and laptop/hybrid segments of its market.

The company also announced that the new SQL Server 2016 would be available for download on June 1.

So is Microsoft on track for making their goal of 1 billion devices running Windows 10 in 2-3 years?

Mehdi says, "With the highest customer satisfaction of any version of Windows, we want everyone to enjoy the benefits of Windows 10". That is exactly three years after the release of Windows 10 on 29 July 2015.

In general, the option to lock up the Windows Store is for organizations that desire more control over their devices, a Microsoft spokesperson told ZDNet.
