Reliance Digital has launched the LYF Earth 2 in India for Rs 20,999. It is the only Android smartphone in India to come with a retina scanner apart from supporting VoLTE and a fingerprint scanner. The smartphone will scan your eye to unlock your phone or any specific app that has been locked. A retina scanner is much more secure as it can recognize up to 266 traits, as opposed to 40 traits by the fingerprint scanner. It is also quite impressive that Reliance Digital has beaten the likes of Samsung, which is widely rumored to be including an iris scanner on its upcoming Galaxy Note 7 phablet.
The only smartphones available in India that include a retina scanner are Microsoft's Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, which were launched towards the end of last year. For the Windows Hello feature to work, Microsoft has integrated two cameras on the smartphones — one infrared camera to light up the eye, and the second camera to click a photo of the eye. You first need to setup a PIN that will act as a backup system. Once the second camera clicks a photo of your eye, a mathematical calculation is performed to create a hash that is checked against the hash stored on your device. If both match, then the phone can be unlocked under two seconds.
LYF Earth 2 specifications, features: The smartphone flaunts a 5-inch full HD (1920×1080 pixels) IPS LCD display with 445ppi, 2.5D curved glass and Gorilla Glass protection. Under the hood is Qualcomm's Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor paired with Adreno 405 GPU and 3GB of RAM. Also on offer is 32GB internal storage, which can be further expanded up to 64GB using a microSD card.
On the photography front, the Earth 2 is equipped with a 13-megapixel camera at the back as well as the front. Both cameras are also accompanied by a LED flash. The rear camera also features laser auto-focus, 4x digital zoom, HRD, panorama, and 1080p video recording capabilities.

It also features a 2,500mAh battery that the company claims is good enough for up to 14 hours of talktime and up to 480 hours on standby mode. Connectivity options include dual-SIM card slots (hybrid setup), 4G with VoLTE support, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, and USB OTG. On the software front, it runs on Android Lollipop 5.1.1.
Reliance Digital is also offering a free Jio 4G SIM card to buyers along with unlimited data and voice plan for a period of three months. The company has launched the LYF Earth 2 in a segment where competition is fierce. Buyers can choose from smartphones like the OnePlus 2, Lenovo Vibe X3, Nexus 5X, and the Moto X Style to name a few. While its specifications are competitive, the retina scanner does give the Earth 2 an edge against its rivals.
