Windows 10 Mobile Heads to the Lumia Icon on Verizon

Windows 10 Mobile Heads to the Lumia Icon on Verizon

As I first reported on Twitter, hell has frozen over: Verizon is delivering the shipping (non-Insider) version of Windows 10 Mobile to its two-year-old orphan, the Lumia Icon.

"Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a software update for your device," the wireless carrier announced. "This software update has been tested to help optimize device performance, resolve known issues and apply the latest security patches."

I strongly recommend not installing Windows 10 Mobile on the Lumia Icon. This in-progress mobile OS is buggier and less stable than Windows Phone 8.1—though Icon users are no strangers to unintended reboots, to be sure—and I find it to provide a less cohesive and refined experience.

But if you simply must do this, it's easy enough: Just download and install the Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor app on the Lumia. Then, assuming you don't have any other pending updates—and you won't—you're good to go, and you can upgrade.

Note that the upgrade happens in two phases, first to build 10586.107 and then to 10586.420.

You can find out more—not that there's much more to say—from the Verizon support web site. As Verizon notes, you're basically on your own if you do upgrade, and will need to go to Microsoft for support.

And remember that the Windows Device Recovery Tool is your friend if you ever want to go back. You probably will.

Good luck!
