Microsoft Surface Phone Delayed Until 2019

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is trying to keep its mobile strategy under wraps so that it can spring a surprise comeback on iOS and Android. The firm is especially tight with information on its plan for the Surface Phone – a rumored device that many hope will mimic the success of the Surface Book, Surface Pro, and more recently the Surface Studio.

However, the grapevine has a vested interest in knowing Microsoft's mobile plans. We've pieced together some bits of information on the firm's mobile plan and it appears that the firm will launch a new Windows Phone that is NOT the Surface Phone in 2017. It also appears that the Surface Phone won't make its debut until 2019. Read on to know what we found out about Redmond's plan for the Surface Phone.

The Surface Phone won't debut until 2019

Germany's Windows United reports that the Surface Phone promises to be a game changer for Microsoft because the device will be a PC in smartphone form factor. The Surface Phone might debut with full PC features based on Windows 10 ARM chips. The Surface Phone should also boast a Cshell adaptive UI that will make it easy for the device to be compatible with different display media and input devices.

Sources close to Panos Panay team in Redmond have hinted that the rumors about the Surface Phone are mostly true. The only problem is that the device might not make its debut until 2018 because Microsoft wants to launch a 'ruthlessly' effective and efficient comeback in the global mobile market. In essence, Microsoft doesn't want to launch the Surface Phone prematurely because it might never get a second chance to launch a comeback in mobile.

Another German source, DrWindows saus that its sources have hinted that Microsoft might actually wait until 2019 before it launches the Surface Phone. Microsoft still needs time to perfectly tie up the loose ends of its CShell, Windows 10 ARM, Windows 10 Cloud, and Windows 10 Mobile before it can launch a PC in a smartphone form factor; hence, Windows lovers will do well to exercise patience in waiting for the device.

Microsoft has a new Windows phone in the pipeline

The Surface Phone won't debut until 2019 but Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) might test the waters with its mobile strategy by launching a new Windows phone this year. News in the grapevine suggests that Microsoft is working on a Windows 10 smartphone that won't be much different from the Lumia line of smartphones. The device will run Windows 10 mobile and it would only run apps in the Windows Stores as opposed to the Surface Phone that should universal apps.

The new Windows smartphone should make its debut towards the end of 2017 and you can expect it to have the same form factor and design as the Lumia 950 and 950XL. However, the new device will debut with improved hardware specs on par with flagship devices on iOS and Android OS. Hence, Windows lover can expect the new Windows 10 smartphone to debut with a sharper camera, faster processor, bezel-less screen, and possibly fingerprint sensor.
