Nokia as we know it looked all but finished after the Microsoft buyout, but company insiders are suggesting that the Finnish phone giant may be plotting a comeback in 2016.
The Nokia N1 Android tablet - a sign of things to come? / © ANDROIDPIT Speaking with Re/code, two Nokia sources said that the company has a pile of technology projects in the pipeline, including smartphones, tablets and virtual reality headsets. These project will be undertaken by Nokia Technologies, one of the three small businesses that were left over after the Microsoft buyout.
"They have a lot of great stuff in development," said former Nokia executive Richard Kerris. "It gave me complete confidence that Nokia is a company that is not going away".
Nokia itself has remained silent on the matter, possibly because it is still under a contract with Microsoft that prevents it selling any phones under the Nokia brand until the end of 2015.
The last notable products to have come from Nokia are the Android-based N1 tablet, and the Z Launcher app, which is also available for Android. These suggest that Nokia is interested in working in the Android space, now that it's no longer tied down to its unsuccessful relationship with Microsoft.
Should Nokia return, it is likely to remain a designer - rather than manufacturer - of future phones, tablets, and other devices, because the company's manufacturing arm was completely sold off to Microsoft.
