March of Empires for Windows Phone is the latest Strategy game for your Lumia from Gameloft. Play as one of three rulers and wage war against rival players to see who can control the most land.
The first thing that strikes you about March of Empires for Windows Phone is that the game is played out in Portrait mode on your Lumia rather than the more traditional Landscape mode. That's because, in some respects, the game relies more on statistics than other such games.

When the game starts you get to choose one of three titles: Highland King, Northern Czar or Desert Sultan, which defines the type of kingdom you have (you can always change this later if you find it's not the right fit for you).
You'll find you a castle to fortify, an army to recruit and train and a fledgling kingdom that needs to be built up to support more citizens and an ever more advanced economy.
Along with building up the city side of your kingdom, you also need to do what kings do best and that is expand your borders. You do this by using your army to invade neighbouring city states. The battles allow you to define your formation, so you can get the best results, so tactics play a hand in the game.
There are also quests and adventures you can go on to expand your influence and to unlock resources. With a wide range of actions to be carried out, it's a complex and some times baffling game.
In order to progress you'll need to form alliances quite early on, chatting with fellow players and working with them, as much as against them, in order to give yourself time to help your kingdom flourish.
It's this online and community aspect of the game that helps drive the originality behind March of Empires for Windows Phone.
We've been checking it out on our Microsoft Lumia 640 and found it to be a rather intense and at times bewildering game. It's certainly not for the casual gamer, but if you love strategy games then you'll love what's on offer here, with a depth of game-play, rich graphics and a great sense of cunning about the whole affair.

March of Empires is free to download from the Windows Store but there are in-app purchases that can be made.
