Microsoft is specializing in making good quality phablets which are worth every dollar, but the evolution won't stop here. It's happening and you can notice the big improvements that have been made to the Lumia 950 XL, in comparison to the Lumia 1520. Designs and Displays
Every manufacturer has a specific design style and Microsoft is not very inspired in this area. Most of its devices have a similar look, featuring a rectangular plastic back with the corners more or less curved and the rear cameras have large circular black lenses. The Lumia 950 XL is prettier than its older sibling, being available in black and white colors, it measures 151.9×78.4×8.1mm and it's not too heavy, as it weights 165grams. It uses an AMOLED display sized at 5.7-inch, but which is capable of supporting a QHD resolution of 1440x2560pixels at 518ppi.
The Lumia 1520 is slightly curved on the edges and has a circular protruding camera, while the available colors are yellow, white, black, red and green. The device is much taller and thicker, measuring 162.8×85.4×8.7mm, but it's also very heavy at 207grams. It sports an IPS LCD screen with a diagonal of 6-inch, but its resolution is lower at 1080x1920pixels with 367ppi.
Hardware
Two years ago, when Qualcomm released the 32bit Snapdragon 800 chipset, Microsoft was among the first manufacturers who ordered it. So, the Lumia 1520 came with a Quad-core 2.2 GHz Krait 400 processor which was backed by Adreno 330 graphics and 2GB of RAM. Microsoft released two variants of models and one of them had an internal memory of 16GB, while the other supported 32GB, however, both devices were equipped with a microSD card slot, so the users were able to expand the internal storage up to 64GB.
The Lumia 950 XL benefits also of the latest Qualcomm chipset, which is the Snapdragon 810 consisting of a quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU and a quad-core 2 GHz Cortex-A57 CPU. The graphics have been upgraded to Adreno 430 and the RAM capacity has been increased up to 3GB, while the internal memory of 32GB is expandable up to 200GB.
Cameras and Batteries
The resolution of both phones' rear cameras is identical – 20MP, and both of the support OIS and a 1.12µm pixel size, but the sensor size of the Lumia 1520 has been changed from 1/1.5′ to 1/2.4′. The video recording capability is unchanged, 2160p@30fps and both cameras have Carl Zeiss optics and use the PureView technology. The front camera of the Lumia 950 XL is definitely more advanced, supporting 5MP, while its sibling has only a 1.2MP secondary shooter which records HD videos at 30 fps.
The battery of the Lumia 950 XL has a capacity of 3,340 mAh and it can be charged via the new USB Type-C, while the Lumia 1520 has a slightly larger battery of 3,400 mAh capacity, which, on paper, lasts 25 hours, also, both batteries support wireless charging.
Prices
$433 is the price of the Lumia 1520 on Amazon, while the Lumia 950 XL costs $715.
