Microsoft spent billions of dollars to acquire Lumia's smartphone business. Nonetheless within a few years' time there are reasons to believe Microsoft is all set to kill Lumia brand and come out with a new smartphone brand that people expect to be called Surface Phone.

For around a year now, rumors about the said handsets are doing the rounds. While tech analysts were pretty sure that the Redmond based Microsoft will launch the handset towards the end of the year 2015 or early 2016, they are claiming that it has got delayed.

The handset has been talked about by almost every tech analyst besides top Microsoft officials. This also include company's CMO Chris Capossella who referred the yet to be released handset as a breakthrough device.

Analysts believe that the handset or rather handsets will be coming next year and not this year. The report on Windows Central blog cites sources from Microsoft, and says that the phone's launch the Surface Phone will come in three different variants based on pricing and markets. It also says that the Surface Phone will also mean an end for the Lumia line.

Many tech analysts believe that the delay can be deciphered due to multiple reasons. Microsoft has delayed Redstone 2, where it will launch new Windows 10 features, to same time period. ZDNet report by Mary Jo Foley says that the delay is to ensure that the new features coincide with the launch of new hardware from the Redmont-based tech company.

Sometimes ago Capossella talked about the Surface Phone saying, "We need more breakthrough experiences, breakthrough hardware to get people to move to Windows mobile OS…It's gotta be a phone that's sort of like, 'Wow.'" The top Microsoft official said that the company was trying to do what it did in the tablet market with Surface Pro tablets.
