Microsoft Surface Phone specs, release date speculations: Why nerds are so excited

More reports are appearing in the tech blogs about Microsoft's forthcoming Surface Phone. Till now the much talked about handset(s) has been confined to rumorland. While Microsoft officials have talked of its imminent arrival, they have remained non committal about its eventual launch in the market.

While Microsoft's Lumia line of smartphones has been a disastrous failure, the Redmond based tech giant believes that rechristening the line to Surface Phone with new and better devices will bring success to it.

This may be true to some extent. When Microsoft bought Nokia's smartphone business, it was still at the bottom of the heap. Nokia had utterly failed to match with Android and Apple's iOS smartphones. Microsoft inherited all the shortcomings of Nokia and as many had predicted flopped badly.

microsoft lumia 650Now emboldened by the success of its Surface Pro laptops, the company is feeling reasonably reassured that a turnaround of sort was still possible in smartphone business.

While many people were hoping that the Surface Phone will arrive this year, Tech Radar says it was highly unlikely that the Microsoft Surface phone would be released this year in October as was being widely speculated.

While it may be delayed by a few months, there are reports that Microsoft Surface phone may be released in 3 variants. It is reported that the three different models would be divided under "Consumers", "Business" and "Prosumer / Enthusiast." it is still unknown what factors would distinguish one model from another, it is speculated that the differentiation could well be based on the pricing and specs such as the storage, processors and even the cameras.

In the meantime many people remember Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's letter in July 2015, sharing hardware plans for the Microsoft Device: "We plan to narrow our focus to three customer segments where we can make unique contributions and where we can differentiate through the combination of our hardware and software. We'll bring business customers the best management, security and productivity experiences they need; value phone buyers the communications services they want; and Windows fans the flagship devices they'll love." So stay tuned.
