If you are looking for an extremely affordable Windows 10 Mobile smartphone that checks most of the right boxes, then the Lumia 550 could be it. That is especially true now that Microsoft has announced a significant price drop for the already wallet-friendly device.
The Lumia 550 is in many ways the classic Windows smartphones. It is the kind of entry-level handset that helped Nokia catch Microsoft's attention when it was carrying the platform as an OEM. These low-end Windows Phone devices have been strong sellers but do not carry big enough margins to push the platform to success.
A lack of flagships hurts Windows 10 Mobile for sure, but that does not stop the Lumia 550 being an interesting device in its own right. It was launched alongside its flagship siblings, the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, and has been available in the United States since January, for the budget price of $139 unlocked.
Microsoft's new deal sees the device get a sizeable 29% price reduction, which means the 550 is now just $99, or $40 less that it was before. It is a decent smartphone to begin with, but for under a hundred bucks it is a bit of a bargain and a great entry into the Windows platform if you are coming from iOS or Android.
As a refresher, the Lumia 550 sports a 4.7-inch LCD display with 720p resolution, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 clocked at 1.1GHz, and 1GB of RAM. Users get 8GB of expandable (to 200GB) storage, a 5-megapixel rear camera, and a 2MP front-facing shooter. Other notable specs include LTE connectivity, a USB 2.0 connector, and a 2100mAh battery.
The sale on the discounted Lumia will run until June 11, so there is still plenty of time to take advantage of this deal. Unfortunately, the deal seems to be limited to US customers.
