Microsoft’s Surface Phone may not arrive this year, or the next

Samsung, Apple, and LG have all launched their respective products this fall and with all those officially in our rear view mirrors, we have the Google October 4th event to look forward to and a Microsoft event that they have reportedly dubbed as 'Project Rio'

It was rumoured that Microsoft's Windows 10 Mobile saviour, the Surface Phone may arrive this fall but according to a new report from MSPoweruser, that may not happen this year, nor the spring next year.

It is reported that Microsoft will take the wraps off a Surface-branded device, codenamed 'Cardinal' which could be the rumoured all-in-one Surface device. Surface Cardinal could be positioned as a product that can turn your desk into "a studio" and may come in one, two, and/or three different screen sizes (21, 24 ,or 27), as first reported by Windows Central. This may be the consumer-focused version of Microsoft's Surface Hub, as Windows Central speculated, using the Perceptive Pixel screen technology that's at the core of Surface Hub. Microsoft had applied for a patent for an all-in-one modular PC in 2015, which was published in February 2016.

Microsoft isn't sharing any sort of information about the fall event, in fact, they are refraining from even acknowledging that there would be such an event. If reports are to be believed, Microsoft will be introducing incremental updates to it's existing Surface tablets with more powerful processors and some other minor features like Apple did with the iPhone 7. There may not be any new products this fall like the Surface Book 2 or the Surface Pro 5 and the long rumoured Surface phone which keeps getting delayed each time it's supposed launch gets closer. Hopefully Microsoft will not do a Project Ara with it.

According to German Site Dr. Windows – it could be as early as Fall 2017 or as (catastrophically) late as early 2018. MSPoweruser reasons the delay could be due to another "McLaren" situation. If you don't know or remember, Microsoft was rumoured to launch a flagship Windows 8.1 phone in 2014 which had "3D touch" much before Apple found out about it. But because it seemed like a gimmick with no real advantages Microsoft scraped the project. And then they had to partner with HTC to create a flagship level Windows phone so they could show off the capabilities of Windows 8.1.

Would you like to see Microsoft come up with the Surface phone? You think it can save Microsoft's mobile OS?
