Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 640 XL - How the 5.7-inch smartphones differ

The Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 640 XL are the big screen options in the Windows Phone family. However, they do serve distinctly different markets – one being the high-end flagship, the other the entry-level big screen phone. Here we check out how they differ and compare.

The Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 640 XL share a few things in common – they both run Windows Phone (albeit different versions presently), they both have amazing looks and they both come with a 5.7-inch display.

However, that is where the similarities pretty much end as the new high-end flagship and highly cost-effective entry-level smartphone have different approaches to meeting user needs. Take a look at how the 5.7-inch smartphones differ:

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 640 XL: Screen

The Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 640 XL may have the same size of screen but that is where the common ground ends. The Lumia 950 XL has a 5.7-inch AMOLED screen with a sharp resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and pixel density of 518 PPI for amazing colour reproduction. It is made from Corning Gorilla Glass 4.

The Lumia 640 XL sports a 5.7-inch display but the IPS LCD with ClearBlack technology screen has a lower 1280 x 720-pixel resolution as befits it entry-level status. On the plus side, both screens come with Glance display, which means you can view updates and information on the screen without the need to wake up the OS, so saving battery life.

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 640 XL: Tech Spec

If there are clear differences with the display of the Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 640 XL then when you take off the hood of both of these Windows Phone devices, you'll find there are very different beasts purring away beneath too.

The Microsoft Lumia 950 XL is powered by the 2GHz Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and backed by 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. There are also difference in the technologies on-board. For starters there is wireless charging, fast-charging and the use of USB Type-C connector on the bottom allows for a faster connection. Then there is support for Continuum, delivering a PC-like experience.

By contrast, the Lumia 640 XL is powered by the quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and come with 1GB of RAM, which is great for handling Windows Phone and the Windows 10 Mobile update but means you won't find the latest technologies tucked away inside.
