Angry Chinese, Offered Win 10 Opt Out Deal But Not In OZ

That all sounds great, but it's sadly years too late to matter.

At one point, some PC owners complained, Microsoft began sending on-screen messages prompting them to download and install Windows 10. Back when Nokia was in charge of Lumia phones, it released the app, which offers users an offline guide for its phones, under the Nokia Care label.

Then there's the fact that Microsoft didn't push OEM's to use Windows Phone in lower-end smartphones.

The market research company Gartner recently reported that while smart phone sales had increased by almost 4 percent in first quarter this year, Microsoft's Windows Phone saw its share of the market shrink below 1 percent.

Previously if a path name went over the limit, the file became inaccessible until you could shorten it.

Kelly asked Microsoft for comment, but the company didn't quite explain the reasoning for the X button's revised functionality.

Xinhua said Windows' pop-up upgrade window does not off er a "decline" option, only an option to upgrade later, while computers with older versions of Windows would automatically start the update at a recommended time if users ignored the pop-up. "We heard a lot of feedback about having to reboot to complete the upgrade so starting with this build a reboot is no longer required when upgrading from the Pro to Enterprise edition", wrote Gabe Aul, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Engineering Systems group, in a blog post. A Surface phone completes that offering: "a set of adaptable, convertible high-end devices with native Microsoft software (which the businesses are running anyway) - not to mention Continuum, which means the Surface phone can effectively be your PC (albeit without the same power)". Microsoft also makes more money from Windows 10 features that increase usage of Bing, the company's ad-supported search engine.

While we're here patiently waiting for the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, it is abundantly clear that ti me is near due to the lack of exciting features in the newest Insider update. Since the second quarter of 2012, Windows Phone has not seen their market share go above 5%.

Problems with Windows 10 are usually because of user error, but not because a user installed the system wrong.

Limited Period Scanning: This new Windows 10 feature will automatically turn on when an antivirus program other than Windows Defender is working. Why would we want to use Win 10 with more ads?

Microsoft Surface phone image and details 'leaked' - but take it all with a pinch of salt

Fresh details have reportedly emerged about Microsoft's rumored 'Surface phone', along with an image that is said to show the device - but it's worth approaching these developments with a dose of scepticism.

Rumors of Microsoft's Surface phone plans have been circulating for months, but the device is believed to be launching around April 2017. Given that the device is still almost a year away from its release, you should certainly take today's 'leaks' with a pinch of salt or two.

The aforementioned image appeared on Baidu today, published by 'nokibar' - a name you may recognize from recent leaked photos of Microsoft's cancelled Lumia 850 handset, as well as an accurate leaked render of the Lumia 650 that went on sale this year.

The image shows a device with what appears to be a USB-C port at the base, and a headphone jack at the top, along with a similar rear camera module design to that of the Lumia 950 XL.

Most notably, the handset is shown in a flexible protective cover that apparently has a built-in keyboard. The keyboard section appears similar in concept to the now-discontinued Surface Touch Cover, while the cover's grips around the device have a similar design to the official CP-637 case for the Nokia Lumia 930 and Lumia Icon.

With at least ten months to go before the handset is expected to make its debut, it seems a bit early for official marketing renders to already be available. An obvious conclusion might be that this is simply a fan-made image - but it is possible that the pic is authentic, if not necessarily representative of the final device.

For example, shortly after Nokia announced its adoption of Windows Phone as its smartphone platform in 2011, the company showed off various handset images illustrating what a Nokia Windows Phone might look like. None of the early device renders it showed ever actually launched as real-world handsets - they were simply intended to illustrate the direction the company was heading in. It's possible - but far from certain - that the image of the Surface phone is a similar 'official concept' render, perhaps intended to show partners what its future hardware might look like.

That's pure speculation, though - but either way, it's probably best not to view the image as a final or definitive representation of the 'real' Surface phone - particularly when you consider that the render shows Windows Hello support on the display despite there being no obvious front-facing camera or iris scanner. Still, it wouldn't be the first time that a Windows phone render lacked such attention to detail - a month ago, for example, Microsoft launched the entry-level Acer Liquid M330 on its Store showing Windows Hello support, even though the device doesn't support that feature.

It's worth remaining similarly - if not more - sceptical of details reported separately by Mobipicker.com. That report claims that, along with a 5.7-inch display and Snapdragon 830 processor, the Surface phone will come in three flavors with these key specs:

  • 3GB RAM / 32GB storage (similar to the current Lumia 950 / 950 XL)
  • 6GB RAM / 128GB storage (similar to some of the very latest Android flagships)
  • 8GB RAM + 500GB storage (!!)
  • If your instinct is to think those purported specs are merely the product of wishful thinking rather than any inside knowledge from well-placed sources, you're not alone.

As we reported last month, Microsoft has already said that Windows 10 Mobile will support the still-unannounced Snapdragon 830 SoC, so it seems logical to assume that the company's newest handset will feature Qualcomm's next-gen processor line - but like some of the more eyebrow-raising details in that report, stating that the Surface phone will use that SoC may just be an assumption, reported as 'fact'.

As we get closer to the anticipated launch of the Surface phone next year, there will no doubt be more leaks and revelations. But with such a long time remaining between now and its release, approach the earliest leaks - especially those that claim to reveal details which even Microsoft may not have finalized yet - with plenty of caution.

Thurrott also suggests that users can download third-party programs that stop the upgrade notifications. As of now, although a list has been put up on the official blog, expectedly people are silently waiting to see how much can Cortana do and if it would ever catch up with Siri. Microsoft did this by pre-scheduling the free upgrade.

Microsoft, in March released the Windows 10 Mobile OS update for the users of the Nokia Lumia devices.

There are over 300 million active devices using Windows 10 each - and of course every copy of Windows 10 has Microsoft Edge installed and ready to use. They call it users' personal DJ.

Well, it would be great to have most of the user base on the same system, if only it weren't as hard as it is. Zhao Zhanling, a legal advisor with the Internet Society of China, said Microsoft has not respected users' right to know and choose, especially since the company may eventually profit from the unwanted upgrades.

Microsoft had planned to launch its own smartphone with Surface branding back in 2012, as BGR exclusively reported and WSJ later reiterated.

The job cuts come after Microsoft announced last week the sale of its feature phone business for $350m to a new Finnish company HMD Global and its Taiwanese partner, FIH Mobile of FoxConn Technology Group.

Microsoft started to push Windows 10 upgrades aggressively to Chinese users earlier this month. While the company does not officially recommend that you create a backup, this is a must for any operating system upgrade.

For example, it was believed that Alcatel could go for a 6-inch screen with a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, with the device being powered by a Snapdragon 820 processor. Services like Backblaze and CrashPlan are handy tools for making backups. And it wants to convince programmers there's a big audience for software apps that are compatible with Windows 10 on PCs, tablets, smartphones and other gadgets.

So what is the culprit behind Windows 10 upgrades going wrong?

The Windows Ink ruler has been updated to include a compass.

Sales of smartphones running various versions of Microsoft's Windows software amounted to 0.7% of the market in the first quarter of 2016, as per market research firm Gartner.

So if a specific accessory or part of your computer acts badly, an outdated driver is often the culprit.

The file explorer icon has got a huge refresh with the addition of more colors.

After reaffirming the company commitment to Windows 10, Myerson offers some encouragement to the team that just saw many of their co-workers laid off.

Obviously, if you feel you only need Windows Defender to do the job, you can leave this feature turned off. Plex has brought native apps to iOS and Android and now are working on a native Windows 10 app as well, and from the sound of it there will be a Windows 10 Mobile version as well.

News For Windows Phones Not Good

But now even Microsoft have sort of admitted it's valiant push to become the third viable smartphone ecosystem has come to a close.

Earlier in the week, according to a report released by Gartner, perhaps the world's leading information technology research company, smartphones with the Windows OS installed accounted for only 0.7% of Smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2016.

    Windows 10

    Windows 10

Despite a slick OS, that was easy to use, easy to master, and installed on good hardware from Nokia, the writing was seen as being on the wall even back in January. Windows Phone had a promising, if slow start, but sales have been in decline since a peak in 2014.

If there was any doubt however that Microsoft were planning to dump Windows phone as a going concern, the news that Microsoft plans to scale back its smartphone business and cut back over 1800 jobs directly linked to its smartphone business, should probably really allay those doubts once and for all.

The move comes only 2 years after the Redmond based tech giant forked out $7.2 billion to but Nokia's handset business. According to the BBC, one union official said Microsoft had abandoned its plans to produce any further handsets of its own.

1350 of the jobs that will be lost will be in Finland itself as Microsoft seek to find a buyer for that part of its operations.

"We are focusing our phone efforts where we have differentiation — with enterprises that value security, manageability and our Continuum capability, and consumers who value the same," said Satya Nadella, chief executive officer of Microsoft. "We will continue to innovate across devices and on our cloud services across all mobile platforms."

Quite what that statement means is anyone's guess, but some experts have predicted that the next grab for a slice of the smartphone market will probably be a Windows 10 smartphone version of the Microsoft Surface.

Is this Microsoft's rumoured Surface Phone?

We will continue to support and update the Lumia devices that are now in the market, and the development of Windows 10 phones by OEMs, such as HP, Acer, Alcatel, VAIO, and Trinity; as well as develop great new devices.

Windows 10 insider preview build 14352 have many new features in Cortana, Windows Ink, an updated file explorer icon and more.

IT giant Microsoft is under fire in China as the company pushes users to upgrade their operating systems to Windows 10, with the pop-up upgrade message not offering a decline option but only a choice to upgrade later.

Q: I've had friends using Windows 7 that say they were upgraded to Windows 10 automatically, without their permission. The update is now coming to millions of other devices and is all set to give Microsoft a major boost in terms of numbers.

As for Windows Ink, Microsoft updated the Sticky Notes app with the ability to create Cortana reminders based on the user's notes. And clicking the red "X" in the upper-right corner of the dialog box - by convention a last resort for users wanting to cancel an operation - instead authorized the upgrade to begin at the allotted time.

Microsoft assures that the automatic scans will occur at the most convenient times, for instance, they won't start if you are playing games, as it may have an influence on the performance of the system. Later, it was found that users" Insider settings were showing up as "Disabled'. Let us know in the comments if you ever used this app on your Lumia phone. This possibility comes as expected for a device of the Surface-series, which has traditionally targeted professional Windows users with high demands for hardware power and integrity.

The decision to make the Windows phone baggage lighter was probably the wisest choice Microsoft could have made. Due to a lot of requests from Insiders, six more games have been added for full-screen, too. Why would we want to use Win 10 with more ads? Note that you'll only see this setting if you use a security product other than Windows Defender. Microsoft recommends it is left enabled for better security.

After a reboot, users are greeted with Windows 10 Enterprise. The patch, however, won't be shipped to users because it's a server-side issue so that Microsoft will take care of it on its own without any input from insiders.

People have been saying on social media for sometime that the only reason they do not use Microsoft Edge is the lack of a password manager and now there is one. Microsoft suggests that this feature has been requested by many gamers.

He said users or consumer protection organizations had the right to file lawsuits against the company as Microsoft had not respected users' right to know and choose, and may eventually profit from the unwanted upgrades.

Microsoft needs to change its mobile strategy or get out

Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday announced plans to streamline the company's smartphone hardware business, which will impact up to 1,850 jobs.

Microsoft anticipates this will result in the reduction of up to 1,350 jobs at Microsoft Mobile Oy in Finland, as well as up to 500 additional jobs globally.

The company acquired Nokia's phone business in 2014 for $7.3 billion, hoping to expand its share of the fast-growing mobile tech industry. In addition to the $7.6 billion it wrote off last year, the company expects to record a $950 million restructuring cost this year.

When asked to confirm whether Microsoft was fully halting its smartphone production, a spokesperson for the tech giant in the U.S. told AFP: "We will continue to develop new devices and adapt Windows 10 for small screens, support Lumia Phones such as the Lumia 650, Lumia 950 and Lumia 950XL, and phones from our OEM hardware partners like Acer, Alcatel, HP, Trinity and Vaio". This miscalculation has proven to be one of the most costly endeavours in the company's history.

According to a report released by Gartner in May, Windows Phone OS only took 0.7 percent market share of the smartphone sales to end users in the first quarter of 2016, lagging behind iOS and Android.

Last week, Microsoft had agreed to sell the feature phone business that it acquired from Nokia for Dollars 350 million to Foxconn, the Taiwenese manufacturer.

Recode published a leaked internal memo from Microsoft, in which Terry Myerson - Executive Vice President of the Windows and Devices Group - explains that it will continue to work on mobile. Up to 1,350 job cuts will come in Finland. But no new Lumia hardware doesn't necessarily mean no new smartphones.

Microsoft has had a rocky few years as it tries to compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung in the smartphone world. With all the right ingredients in place - design, features, OS and above all, brand value, there is no reason why Nokia could once again, end up being a force to be reckoned with in the smartphones space.

Nadella, who initially opposed Ballmer's move into the handset business, hasn't publicly declared a full retreat, saying in a statement that the company "will continue to innovate across devices".

Microsoft to cut up to 1850 jobs in smart phone business

Despite the uninspiring trend of job cuts and sold businesses, Microsoft's stock has reportedly shot up by 1.5% following the recent announcement.

"This list includes a limited set of Windows Phone 8.1 devices and does not include some devices that are now running Windows 10 Mobile in the Windows 10 Mobile Insider program".

Microsoft is also still producing "higher end phones" which includes their own branded phones and the Lumia line.

"We will continue to innovate across devices and on our cloud services across all mobile platforms", Nadella added.

Three years after Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia, the tech giant company is exterminating last remnants of the Finnish tech company.

The company acquired Nokia's phone business in 2014, seeking to capitalise on and the fast-growing industry, but by last summer it was slashing the value of that business and it eliminated 26,000 jobs.

Global market share of Windows smartphones fell below 1 percent in the first quarter of 2016, according to research firm Gartner.

"This topic provides information about what's new in Windows 10, version 1607 minimum hardware requirements, form factors, device experiences, and hardware components across all Windows 10 devices", one such reference to the 1607 build reads.

While it pursues that Windows-centric strategy, Microsoft is also developing technology for rival mobile operating systems.

Microsoft anticipates that up to 1,350 job cuts will be at Microsoft Mobile Oy in Finland. Employees working for Microsoft Oy, a separate Microsoft sales subsidiary based in Espoo, Finland, will not be affected by the layoffs.

Microsoft has been among some of the biggest names when it comes to the world of technology, and has been coming out with several updates and upgrades for their phones over the years.

"When I look back on our journey in mobility, we've done hard work and had great ideas, but haven't always had the alignment needed across the company to make an impact", Mr. Myerson wrote in his email to employees.

Microsoft cuts 1850 jobs in its smartphone unit

Microsoft acquired Nokia's Devices and Services business back in 2013 for a record $7.1 billion.

Nokia's mobile business acquisition would certainly go down as one of the costlier missteps in Microsoft's history. Microsoft plans to shed up to 1,850 jobs, mostly in Finland, and there by write down $950 million from the business. Employees working for Microsoft Oy, a separate Microsoft sales subsidiary based in Espoo, Finland, will not be affected by the layoffs. It also reduced the number of smartphones it offered and took a $7.6 billion accounting charge, writing off almost the entire value of the Nokia deal.

"But Nadella's vision for Windows 10 is predicated on delivering the operating system to any screen, whether its a watch, a giant TV or a phone". Phones running Microsoft's software now make up only a small portion of the overall market.

"I expected them to keep trying", he said.

Microsoft said in a statement it would continue to develop the Windows 10 platform and support its Lumia smartphones, but did not specify whether it would develop new Windows phones.

Yet our phone success has been limited to companies valuing our commitment to security, manageability, and Continuum, and with consumers who value the same.

As a result, Nokia and Microsoft slashed thousands of Finnish jobs over the past decade.

    The Windows 10 Mobile OS update came out for the users of many older Nokia Lumia phones such as Lumia 1520, 930, 640, 640XL, 730, 735, 830, 532, 535, 540, 635 1GB, 636 1GB, 638 1GB, 430, 435, BLU Win HD w510u, BLU Win HD LTE x150q, and the MCJ Madosma Q501 devices.

However, Microsoft hasn't backed off plans to bring out a new range of small mobile devices in the spring of 2017.

Many tech analysts have interpreted the latest move as Microsoft's way of saying that it is done with the manufacturing of mobile devices.

"The company must bear as big a responsibility as possible over what they have done by laying off people", Employment Minister Jari Lindstrom explained in a statement. They succeeded until now because they were the only place to turn. Since buying the company Microsoft has failed to compete with Google's Android and Apple iPhones, with a current total market share of less than 1 percent.

Microsoft has not given up on Windows phone and here̢۪s why

The future of Microsoft's smartphone business has been a topic of widespread and increasingly acrimonious discussion for some time now, and a major pain point for Windows and Microsoft enthusiasts. The themes range from "Windows Phone is dead!" to "Windows 10 Mobile is dead!" to "Microsoft has given up on its smartphones business!"– and every other conceivable combination of hyperbole.

Let's take those specific themes in turn. First, of course, Windows Phone (the operating system) is "dead"– it was replaced by Windows 10 Mobile. And, of course, Windows 10 Mobile isn't "dead"– it's being actively developed by Microsoft. The question of whether Microsoft has "given up" on its smartphone business, however, really depends on exactly what we mean by that, and we'll get to just that question in a moment.

Of all of the things being talked about, though, perhaps the strangest (and, I would submit, the most ridiculous) is the suggestion that Microsoft should abandon Windows 10 Mobile and instead offer smartphones running Google's Android mobile operating system. One such example is a story over at TechnoBuffalo, which was penned in response to the news about Microsoft's final shuttering of the Nokia remnants. Another example was from a month or so ago, written in response to generally bad news around Microsoft's smartphone market share.

The most basic and immediate question raised by this peculiar suggestion is: why in the world would Microsoft do such a thing? And I'm not just being rhetorical: really, what would be the purpose?

Note that the specific proposition — that Microsoft should adopt Android to save its smartphone hardware business — is probably not worth discussing all by itself. Yes, you can concoct a rationale and make it sound perfectly reasonable in a vacuum — Android dominates in smartphones, making a version of Android means instant access to that market, and so if you want to compete in making smartphones then Android seems to be one possible avenue. But that entire line of reasoning relies on one really bad assumption.

That assumption is shared by a number of other competing ideas, including the ones that say that Microsoft is failing in smartphones. The Android proposition, therefore, presents the perfect opportunity to raise other important points that are more generally applicable and to do away with that one really bad assumption that is often at the heart of many of doom-and-gloom stories.

That really bad assumption is that Microsoft actually wants to be in the business of selling smartphone hardware.

    What is Microsoft's business, really?

Historically, Microsoft is not and has never been a hardware company (Xbox and HoloLens and the rest aside, for the moment). For decades, Microsoft has produced operating systems like MS-DOS and then Windows, and its OEM partners have made the hardware to run them. Microsoft has also made productivity and server products that run on top of the operating system, the latter of which OEMs have also leveraged in building out their own businesses. And this same business model was applied to Windows smartphones at the very beginning, when Microsoft introduced Windows Phone 7 and a number of OEMs, (Samsung, Dell, HTC, and LG) released smartphones based on it.

In short, Microsoft built itself into a multi-billion dollar global corporation by laser-focusing throughout most of its history on being a successful software company. At the same time, Dell, HP, Lenovo, AMD, Nvidia, Logitech, and many, many other companies built their own successful businesses around making hardware that runs and supports Microsoft software. This general ecosystem was given a name, specifically the portmanteau of "Wintel" combining Windows and Intel, and on PCs, at least, Wintel remains just as descriptive today.

Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer did develop and begin implementing a strategy that included a foray into hardware as a bona fide aspect of Microsoft's strategy. Even Ballmer, though, seemed to have a limited vision of what hardware meant to Microsoft, as he indicated in his 2012 letter to shareholders:

We will continue to work with a vast ecosystem of partners to deliver a broad spectrum of Windows PCs, tablets and phones. We do this because our customers want great choices and we believe there is no way one size suits over 1.3 billion Windows users around the world. There will be times when we build specific devices for specific purposes, as we have chosen to do with Xbox and the recently announced Microsoft Surface. In all our work with partners and on our own devices, we will focus relentlessly on delivering delightful, seamless experiences across hardware, software and services. This means as we, with our partners, develop new Windows devices we'll build in services people want. Further, as we develop and update our consumer services, we'll do so in ways that take full advantage of hardware advances, that complement one another and that unify all the devices people use daily. So right out of the box, a customer will get a stunning device that is connected to unique commu nications, productivity and entertainment services from Microsoft as well as access to great services and applications from our partners and developers around the world. (emphasis added)

Certainly, at the very least, this doesn't sound like a company that ever intended to replace its OEM partners with its own hardware. Looking in from the outside, it seems much more that Microsoft's major hardware moves, such as the Nokia acquisition and the introduction of the Surface line, were outliers borne of desperation and frustration rather than a wholesale shift in strategy.

In desperation, Microsoft bought Nokia in part because the Finnish phone maker was struggling and Android would inevitably have become an attractive option–and losing Nokia would have spelled immediate death for Microsoft's mobile OS at a time when its ultimate failure as a mainstream product wasn't nearly so obvious. Without Nokia, and with other Windows Phone OEMs already having backed away from the OS, the future of Windows Phone was bleak.

Microsoft was thus faced with a difficult choice. Either purchase Nokia, or give up on smartphones well before there was sufficient reason to throw in the towel. In hindsight, the decision to purchase Nokia seems like the wrong one given that over $10 billion was essentially wasted. At the time, though, there were reasonably good arguments to go forward with it.

The Surface line, on the other hand, was a frustrated reaction to years of inferior OEM Windows machines (inferior to Apple's MacBook and with nothing that competed with iPad) and a desire to put a best foot forward with Windows 8. Surface was meant to serve as a halo product to show what's possible with Windows 8 (and now Windows 10), as well as to demonstrate to OEMs that quality Windows machines were possible and to pressure OEMs into making them. Intel had its own similar initiative, Ultrabook, that arguably had the same general goal of making Windows machines more competitive with the MacBook.

Likely to Microsoft's mild surprise and delight, Surface took off, probably well beyond Microsoft's initial aspirations, and has become a multi-billion dollar (and profitable) business in its own right. Furthermore, the Surface line succeeded in creating a vibrant 2-in-1 market that is currently the only PC segment that is growing in sales and one where Microsoft competes well head-to-head against Apple.

In essence, Surface overachieved, and so Microsoft will most certainly continue the line given just how popular and influential it has become. Surface can continue to serve as a halo product for Windows 10 without costing Microsoft an arm and a leg and indeed while helping to bolster the company's financial performance.

But that still doesn't mean that Microsoft wants to be a hardware company. With CEO Satya Nadella in charge, the answer to that question has likely been made unequivocally clear. As he outlined in his letter to employees on June 17, 2015:

Terry Myerson will lead a new team, Windows and Devices Group (WDG), enabling our vision of a more personal computing experience powered by the Windows ecosystem. We will combine the engineering efforts of our current Operating Systems Group and Microsoft Devices Group (MDG) led by Stephen Elop. This new team brings together all the engineering capability required to drive breakthrough innovations that will propel the Windows ecosystem forward. WDG will drive Windows as a service across devices of all types and build all of our Microsoft devices including Surface, HoloLens, Lumia, Surface Hub, Band and Xbox. This enables us to create new categories while generating enthusiasm and demand for Windows broadly. (emphasis added)

That sounds very much, once again, like Microsoft makes hardware specifically to drive the Windows 10 market in the direction that Microsoft wants it to go, not a company that wants hardware to be at the center of its revenue-generating businesses. Completely erasing the Nokia acquisition as Microsoft has now done is just a fat red line drawn sharply through the idea that Microsoft wants to be a smartphone hardware company.

lumia950with640XL Microsoft has not given up on Windows phone and here's why

Wherefore art thou Windows 10 Mobile?

And so, where does this leave Windows 10 Mobile? The shortest answer is: it leaves Windows 10 Mobile exactly where Windows Phone began, and exactly where Microsoft has been telling us it resides. That is, Windows 10 Mobile is and will remain nothing more nor less than Microsoft's Windows 10 SKU for OEMs that want to make Windows smartphones and other small Windows 10 devices. Windows 10 Mobile will take its place alongside every other Windows 10 SKU, right beside Windows 10 Home and Pro and Enterprise and IoT. Windows 10 Mobile is, in essence, the logical extension of Microsoft's universal Windows 10 strategy — you can't be Windows Everywhere if you don't run on smartphones.

To be a little more precise, Windows 10 Mobile will serve as a secure, manageable mobile OS for OEMs like HP who want to offer complete soup-to-nuts Windows 10 solutions for business, and specifically enterprise, companies. Simply put, Microsoft will place the onus of manufacturing Windows 10 Mobile devices where the company has always intended, on its OEM partners.

Microsoft is now doing what they likely intended to do all along–act as the company that provides the (mobile) operating system for OEMs to use in making the (smartphone) hardware. A recent email from Microsoft's Terry Myerson to partners makes that perfectly clear:

I want to assure you that your investment in Windows phones is not at risk. The mobility of the Windows 10 experience remains core to our More Personal Computing ambition. We will continue to support and update the Lumia devices that are currently in the market, and development of Windows 10 phones by OEMs, such as HP, Acer, Alcatel, VAIO, and Trinity; as well as develop great new devices. We'll continue to adapt Windows 10 for small screens. We'll continue to invest in key areas -security, management, and Continuum capabilities – that we know are important to commercial accounts and to consumers who want greater productivity. And we'll help drive demand for Lumia devices.

    What about consumers?

What's most unclear at this point is where Windows 10 Mobile will play in the consumer smartphone market. Clearly, that market is dominated by Android and Apple's iOS, and breaking into that market has proven difficult (or perhaps impossible) for Microsoft to this point. Indeed, given the now-saturated nature of the smartphone market (78% of potential smartphone purchasers already own a smartphone, meaning most new customers must be convinced to switch from another platform), it's likely impossible for anyone to break in.

If you hope to see Windows 10 Mobile become a competitive consumer smartphone platform anytime soon with access to all of the apps and services that iOS and Android users enjoy, then you're likely to be disappointed.

The Lumia line of smartphones represented Nokia's and then Microsoft's previous best effort to gain some traction in the consumer smartphone market, and now it's likely a foregone conclusion that the Lumia brand will give way completely to the Surface Phone. The question then becomes, why will Microsoft bother to make the Surface Phone if they don't want to be a hardware company?

travelwithsurface Microsoft has not given up on Windows phone and here's why

travelwithsurface Microsoft has not given up on Windows phone and here's why

    Microsoft's Nexus program?

As far as I can tell, it's almost guaranteed that the Surface Phone will serve precisely the same purpose as the original Surface. That is, the Surface Phone will show OEMs how to make the best possible Windows 10 Mobile devices while demonstrating the best and most important Windows 10 Mobile capabilities. Surface Phone will showcase Microsoft's vision for Windows 10 Mobile, in much the same way and for the same reasons as Google's Nexus program does for Android.

If the Surface Phone catches on and contributes some profit to Microsoft's bottom line as Surface 2-in-1s have done, then great. At the same time, if the Surface Phone and OEM devices become hit with consumers and help Windows 10 Mobile compete in the consumer smartphone market along with OEM devices, then that will likely just be gravy. Ultimately, I would never say that Microsoft would turn down success with consumers (and nor would their OEM partners, I'm sure), I'm just saying that right now, mainstream smartphone consumers are not Microsoft's primary concern.

So, what about this Android idea?

If any of what I've written here is valid, particularly that Microsoft really doesn't want to make smartphone hardware a major part of their business, then why in the world would they start making Android smartphones? Doing so would be the quickest possible way to kill off Windows 10 Mobile and obliterate the universal Windows 10 strategy. OEMs would be furious and alienated. Such a move would also severely damage Microsoft's Universal Windows Platform strategy, and hamper its Windows 10 Mobile business and enterprise play.

In short, it's an idea that makes utterly zero sense.

What does make sense is that Microsoft will continue to push its cross-platform productivity strategy, ensuring that all of its productivity and cloud products run on every meaningful platform. Meanwhile, the company will work to ensure that all mobile platforms–iOS and Android included–can work as seamlessly as possible with Windows 10. Along these lines, Android is a very extensible platform, and so it's no surprise that Microsoft is making Google's open source mobile OS work well with Windows 10.

It's all about that business customer

Meanwhile, Windows 10 Mobile will offer the best solution for businesses looking to standardize on a secure, manageable platform that runs their line-of-business applications without issue. In this regard, Microsoft has actually made themselves fairly clear, in memos such as the one Microsoft sent a few weeks ago to its OEM partners:

I understand that you are hearing concerns from certain partners about Microsoft's commitment to the mobile space.

Let me be very clear: We are committed to deliver Windows 10 on mobile devices with small screen running ARM processors.

We are currently in development of our next generation products and I wanted to reconfirm our commitment to Windows 10 Mobile. We believe in this product's value to business customers and it is our intention to support the Windows 10 Mobile platform for many years. We have a device roadmap to support that from Microsoft as well as our OEM partners who will also be selling an expanded lineup of phone devices based on this platform.

Microsoft is now a "cloud-first, mobile-first" productivity solutions company, and business customers are central to the company's strategy. It seems safe to assume that any hardware the company makes will be aimed at supporting those efforts, which are primarily around Windows 10, Office, Azure, and other cloud and productivity products and services. Windows 10 Mobile remains an important software product within the company's overarching strategy, and just where it fits at this point seems clear — the statement from the memo above, "We believe in (Windows 10 Mobile's) value to business customers," is fairly straightforward.

If you're an enterprise customer that needs to create a system used by 50,000 employees that can reliably and securely run your line-of-business applications and is easy to manage, then having the same operating system on your company-issued smartphones as runs on their desktops and their notebooks and their 2-in-1 machines makes a great deal of sense. And if you're an HP, then the ability to incorporate such a smartphone into your sales proposal is eminently attractive.

If you've read all the way to the end of this piece, then you know that I'm not very bullish on the notion of Microsoft dumping Windows 10 Mobile for Android. In fact, the day that Microsoft starts selling Android smartphones is the day that I paint my car white and slap a huge Apple logo onto the hood. I guarantee you, neither of those is likely to happen.

At the same time, I find it just as unlikely Microsoft will ever stop developing Windows 10 Mobile. While the future of Windows smartphones in the mainstream consumer market remains unclear, and we'll likely have to wait until 2017 to see what Microsoft plans next for their own smartphones, the company clearly intends to continue to have a presence in the smartphone market.

And so, yes, Windows Phone is dead, Windows 10 Mobile is not, and Microsoft is not giving up on smartphones. The company is simply incorporating smartphones more intelligently into the strategy that they're implementing today, while keeping an eye on an extremely uncertain future. The biggest thing to remember, though, is that no matter what, making smartphones is not Microsoft's primary business — and once you accept that, then all of the pieces starting falling into place.

Microsoft hangs up on smartphone workers

Although Microsoft indicated it would continue to develop the Windows 10 platform and support its Lumia smartphones, the firm's chief shop steward in Finland, Kalle Kiili, said Microsoft would no longer produce new phones. Employees working for Microsoft Oy, a separate Microsoft sales subsidiary based in Espoo, are not in scope for the planned reductions.

The company's stock was up more than 1.5 percent after the announcement Wednesday. As a result of the action, Microsoft will record a charge in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2016 for the impairment of assets in its More Personal Computing segment, related to these phone decisions.

The move comes just two years after the United States company paid $7.2bn for Nokia's handset business. However, the deal never seemed to provide the much-needed fuel for Microsoft to catch market Apple and Google, who both lead the market with their iOS and Android devices.

Nearly a year ago, Nadella had announced a "more effective and focused phone portfolio" with business, value phones and flagships gaining prominance.

Terry Myerson shows off the Uber app on a Windows Phone device in this 2014 Microsoft photo. Earlier this month, it agreed to sell its feature phones business to a new Finish company HMD Global and Foxconn Technology Group from Taiwan for $350 million. That was a year after it splashed out $7.2bn on Nokia's phone business.

Microsoft's embattled phone business looks in deep trouble as it announced a whopping 1850 job cuts and an associated $950m write-off. Microsoft's overall bottom line continues to benefit from its cloud-first strategy.

But that phone business is drastically pared back from two years ago. Microsoft acquired Nokia's handset business in hope of catching up, which gave the software giant a hardware maker committed to using its operating system. Today Microsoft said that due to the customer feedback it had received it will add another notification after users try and get rid of the dialogue by pressing the close gadget, providing "an additional opportunity for cancelling the upgrade".

Meanwhile, watch for Nokia-branded phones to make their way back to the market through the companies that just bought those assets from Microsoft.

Torrex Pro Torrent App May Be Coming To Xbox One

Last week, Microsoft revealed that Halo 5's Forge mode is coming to Windows 10, which includes the ability to play created maps in custom games with other Windows 10 players.

The developer attempted to lessen down the curiosity of the Halo 5 fans by releasing a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) in a Halo Waypoint post on Friday, May 20. In addition, they get access to all Arena multiplayer maps including those bookmarked on Xbox One.

It looks like it will be possible for Halo to be released on both the Xbox One and Windows 10 PC's.

The Halo 5 Forge will be absolutely free, so there's really no reason to complain but the complaints are coming in regardless because we still don't have the traditional Halo games on PC. We have already seen games like Gears of War Ultimate Edition and Quantum Break release on both the Xbox One as well as the PC via the Universal Windows Platform, albeit to very mixed reviews, but that doesn't mean that the gesture is not welcome.

< p>According to MS Power User, its latest update will prep the software for its upcoming cross-platform compatibility and lay the foundation for "supporting background downloads of torrents on Windows 10 Mobile" that will be enabled with this summer's Anniversary Update.

"Guardians" will still not be made available on the PC.

Microsoft is also reported to be developing a new Xbox console codenamed "Scorpio", and is rumored to be out by next year.

Q: Can players access all of the multiplayer maps from "Halo 5: Guardians" on Xbox One?

Torrex Pro's developer Finebits OÜ announced that its app will be ready for the Anniversary Update, and that it will be available on Xbox One, starting from July.

Recently, in a Kotaku report hinting at Microsoft's potential plans for their Xbox platform, the sources spoken to by the web site also revealed what the company may have in mind for future games. Considering it is already available for Windows 10 and Windows Phone , a UWP version might not be that much of an issue.

In reply to this, 343i confirmed that both mouse and keyboard support will be offered not only in gameplay, but also within the creative experience in Forge on Windows 10. One of the ways to do that is merging the two stores, so Microsoft notified interested developers to start programming their apps to support the upcoming update.

Nokia Lumia Windows Phone devices officially get Windows 10 Mobile OS update

Microsoft is regularly adding more and more names to its app store, and has also been working on its OS. The company needs to increase their strength in numbers and this is the reason why it has released the Windows 10 Mobile OS update for the older, Nokia Lumia devices.

The update was earlier available only for the users of the Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL, Lumia 550 and Lumia 650 phones but the company has now released it for millions of more phones.

"This list includes a limited set of Windows Phone 8.1 devices and does not include some devices that are currently running Windows 10 Mobile in the Windows 10 Mobile Insider program. As Windows 10 delivers significant new innovations, many older devices are not able to successfully upgrade without an impact on the customer experience. Our goal is to only offer the Windows 10 upgrade to devices that we are confident can continue to deliver a good customer experience," the Redmond-based company said.

Shut the Windows This is what you will see when asked to upgrade

Shut the Windows This is what you will see when asked to upgrade

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that the company will now focus its phone efforts where it can differentiate itself from competitors, namely with consumers and enterprises that value security, manageability and the company's Continuum capability that turns a smartphone running Windows 10 into a PC. The company said it would continue to support Windows 10 Mobile and any Lumia smartphones running the operating system.

Nokia previous year had cut down 7,800 jobs and write downs $7.5 billion, is still struggling to survive in the market even after the acquisition.

Microsoft's latest announcement comes a week after the company revealed it would be selling its entry-level phone assets to Taiwan-based Foxconn Technology Group and the newly-formed HMD Global Oy, led by former Nokia and Microsoft Mobile employee Arto Nummela, for $350 million.

The restructuring and job cuts mark another way of Microsoft undoing a portion of its 2014 acquisition of Nokia's phone business and refocusing its efforts in the mobile sphere. Continue to stay firm on pursuing innovations across Windows devices.

Reuters was told by a Finnish union representative that the cuts would essentially put an end to Microsoft's development of new phones.

In July 2015, Microsoft announced a $7.6bn adjustment on its Phone hardware business just 15 months after buying Nokia's mobile phone business for $7.2bn. The company said the cut affect another 500 jobs globally, but it did specify region. "But given the current circumstances, we believe that Microsoft is now, at last, following the path that is most likely to lead it to success in the market for its smartphones", Delaney concluded.

Microsoft is continuing to scale back its smartphone business, announcing plans to lay off up to 1,850 employees, as the tech giant has failed to gain traction against Apple and Google Android devices.

The activities linked with Wednesday's announcement are anticipated to be significantly complete by the end of the calendar year and fully completed by July 2017, the end of Microsoft's next fiscal year.

The decision means that Microsoft is scrapping what was left in Finland of Nokia's former glory as the world's former top mobile phone maker.

Jolla launches Sailfish development community phone Jolla C

With the market share of Windows Phone going down drastically, Jolla is gearing up to attain a spot in the emerging smartphone market, now dominated by Android and iOS. Based on the open source Linux-based Sailfish OS, the smartphone is primarily oriented for developers. While there has been closure to the Jolla Tablet in the past, not to mention gaining some interest in their Jolla Sailfish OS as well as smartphone, here we are with its second smartphone - the Jolla C. The company is now running an extended refund program for all customers who have pre-ordered the tablet.

As part of its community device program, which is slated to run until May 2017, Jolla C buyers will be invited to live online community sessions.

Jolla on Friday launched a new smartphone exclusively made for interested Sailfish OS developers. The hardware division entered a debt restructuring program and laid off staff at the end of 2015, then canceled its crowd-funded tablet plan a few weeks later, leaving concerns over the company's future, and a lot of disappointed backers. While the platform is compatible with Android apps, the Jolla C intentionally ships without any third party content - to offer the "purest" OS experience. Billed as a more secure alternative to Android, Jolla took $12 million in investment during May, after the OS was adopted by TRI's delayed Turing Phone, and before a handful of other agreements with worldwide device manufacturers had been signed.

According to the company, it gives early access to developers to try the latest Sailfish OS and its features. Storage is a conservative 16GB, though there's room for microSD expansion. In the camera department, it packs an 8MP autofocus rear camera with LED flash and a 2MP front camera for selfies. It measures 142 x 72 x 9.6 mm and weighs 150 grams. This dual-SIM smartphone also includes support for 4G LTE.

Hope for Jolla rests on its software division and Sailfish OS. Stay tuned for more updates!

Microsoft signals end of Nokia experiment, cuts 1850 jobs

His predecessor, former CEO Steve Ballmer, orchestrated the purchase of Nokia's struggling mobile phone business for €5.4 billion ($6 billion) in 2013.

It's the second shoe to drop.

What remains after that was the feature phone portion of the business, which was sold last week for $350 million.

Today, Microsoft announced plans to "streamline" the company's smartphone hardware business, which will affect up to 1850 jobs.

As per to the Microsoft, it said that it would cut off to 1,850 jobs, in a move that clearly puts the stamp of two year chief executive Satya Nadella on the USA company. Mr. Nadella also said that the spirit of innovation across all mobile and cloud platforms will not dry out with this step.

Microsoft has gone as far as stating that Nokia's sales division is protected, and that the job cuts are focused entirely on Microsoft's Mobile Oy. Other than this, it is worth noticing, that with this layoff, the company will be writing off $950 million from the business.

Kagan pointed out that even with a mobile market share of 4 percent or 5 percent, Microsoft was in better shape than many competitors who haven't been able to break even.

The acquisition of Nokia's mobile business will go down as one of the costlier missteps in Microsoft's history. And this morning, it's been revealed that more employees are to lose their jobs, most of which will go in Finland as Microsoft ends local phone design and manufacturing.

The restructuring will result in a one-time charge of $950 million which includes roughly $200 million for severance payments. Continue to update Lumia and partner phone devices while taking care of their customers and 3.

Despite lower prices for many of their smartphones, Nokia and Microsoft have never been able to make significant inroads in the consumer space against Apple and a bevy of Android-producing smartphone juggernauts.

Nadella has been trying to revitalize the company that was once known mainly for personal-computer software by focusing on Web-based services and productivity applications.

However, the bet has not paid off for Microsoft, which now has less than one per cent share of the global smartphone operating systems market.

Microsoft to cut up to 1850 jobs in smart phone business

"We are focusing our phone efforts where we have differentiation", said chief executive Satya Nadella in a statement.

Microsoft has gone as far as stating that Nokia's sales division is protected, and that the job cuts are focused entirely on Microsoft's Mobile Oy.

Microsoft has made a decision to finally hammer the nail on Nokia phones.

Though the statement does not hint at a Surface phone, it does point to the continuation of its Windows 10 Mobile operations either, which gives hope to fans anticipating the Surface phone.

Microsoft's Lumia and Windows Phone strategy has failed as both sales and Windows Phone market share have declined since the tech giant's mobile restructuring past year. 'Our company will be pragmatic and embrace other mobile platforms with our productivity services, device management services, and development tools, ' Myerson told staff, 'regardless of a person's phone choice, we want everyone to be able to experience what Microsoft has to offer them. It's likely that Microsoft fans have made the Windows Store their home, but you can't help but wonder if the general public has chose to follow suit.

Microsoft is also still producing "higher end phones" which includes their own branded phones and the Lumia line. Last July, the company said it planned to cut as many as 7,800 jobs and write down the handset business by US$7.6bil while earlier this month it agreed to sell its feature phone unit.

The workforce that had been remaining was but a mere fraction of the roughly 25,000 workers who had joined Microsoft as a result of the company's acquisition of Nokia's handset business in 2011, according to The New York Times.

Overall this is a smart move by Microsoft.

The company recently also came up with its Continuum feature which allows a smartphone, utilizing Windows 10 platform to perform as a PC when connected with a monitor and keyboard. A seamless bridge between all devices seems to be their ultimate goal. With more gadgets and Xbox becoming the "living room" piece of Windows 10, this means Microsoft won't be stepping away any time soon. They are making cuts elsewhere and refocusing and it is a good thing to see Xbox as one of their key products.

Microsoft Reiterates Windows Phone Commitment, Reveals Future Plans

Microsoft announced earlier this week that an additional 1,850 jobs would be removed from its mobile business, most of them in Finland, as it moves to reorganize its mobile strategy and finalize the Nokia experiment that cost it billions of dollars.

In an email sent by Microsoft to its business partners involved in the mobile industry, the company reiterates its support for Windows 10 Mobile and also provides us with a hint as to what the future of the platform could look like, as everyone expects it to give up on Lumia devices and focus exclusively on a possible Surface Phone.

Although Microsoft doesn't specifically acknowledge a Surface Phone, it confirms that new hardware would see daylight while at the same time supporting the rest of the ecosystem should partners continues to build devices running Windows 10 Mobile.

According to WindowsCentral, Microsoft's mobile business will be focused on just some specific markets, including the following: US, UK, France, Germany, Poland, Australia, and Western Europe (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland).

This means that Microsoft might be giving up on some very successful Windows Phone markets, such as India and Brazil, but this doesn't mean that Windows 10 Mobile won't be available in these countries. Partners will continue to build and sell such phones here, and this is why Microsoft is betting so big on the ecosystem.

On the other hand, the Surface Phone is expected to be a high-end model available at a hefty price, so Microsoft is trying to focus on markets where such a product could make more sense. Other manufacturers can continue making low-budget models and target countries where Microsoft won't sell its devices.

    Betting big on Continuum

Microsoft will continue to invest in Continuum, a feature that converts a regular mobile phone into a portable PC with the help of Windows 10 and a larger screen. Windows 10 Mobile can adapt to different screen sizes, and Microsoft sees Continuum as a feature capable of winning not only the enterprise but also those markets where buying both a PC and a smartphone is a budget issue.

The Surface Phone will also be built around this feature, although it'll bring several other features running on powerful hardware. Universal apps will be the core of the device, and it's critical to Microsoft to make this concept successful.

Ultimately, Microsoft reiterates that Windows 10 Mobile is not by any means dead despite the recent cuts, and it calls "commercial accounts and consumers" as the main categories that could benefit from improvements in the coming months and years.

"I want to assure you that your investment in Windows phones is not at risk. The mobility of the Windows 10 experience remains core to our More Personal Computing ambition. We will continue to support and update the Lumia devices that are currently in the market, and the development of Windows 10 phones by OEMs, such as HP, Acer, Alcatel, VAIO, and Trinity; as well as develop great new devices," Microsoft says in the email

"We'll continue to adapt Windows 10 for small screens. We'll continue to invest in key areas - security, management, and Continuum capabilities - that we know are important to commercial accounts and to consumers who want greater productivity. And we'll help drive demand for Lumia devices."

If it does launches, the Surface Phone should see daylight in the spring of 2017, so Microsoft is expected to be rather quiet in terms of Windows Phone news in the coming months (except for the Anniversary Update launching in the summer, of course).

Microsoft cutting 1850 jobs related to mobile phone sector

The fix that may make Nokia phones buyable again

Microsoft cutting 1850 jobs related to mobile phone sector

Microsoft has laid off hundreds of employees tied to its smartphone business, as the company finally exits the consumer phone market and attempts to streamline its worldwide mobile division (via The Verge).

Microsoft said it will continue to update and support its current Lumia smartphones as well as those of third-party manufacturers based on the Windows 10 platform, and plans to develop new devices.

Nadella also promised innovation in "cloud services across all mobile platforms". Microsoft announced 7,800 layoffs and claimed a loss of roughly $7.6 billion. Windows Phone's market share is still in decline and since absorbing Nokia's former employees, Microsoft has had a fair few rounds of job cuts.

Some in the industry have speculated that this could see the end of Microsoft's smartphone ambitions.

Around 1,850 jobs are set to be lost at Microsoft, in a move that will cost the company around $950 million (£648m), including $200 million (£136m) in severance pay-offs.

Some 1,350 jobs at Microsoft Mobile Oy in Finland will go, as well as up to 500 additional jobs globally, the company said.

These layoffs are apparently part of the final steps in the two year saga of the Microsoft acquisition of Nokia and its utter and complete failure as a business move. The company's previous chief executive, Steven A. Ballmer, made the deal with the goal of transforming Microsoft, a company that was struggling to keep pace with the likes of Apple and Google in the mobile business.

The software-rich smartphones have already buried sales of Nokia's traditional mobile phones, which used to be a big player in this segment once.

It's been widely speculated Microsoft could build on the success of its convertible Surface tablets and leverage that product line to create a high-end Surface phone in the next year.

The actions associated with today's announcement are expected to be substantially complete by the end of the calendar year and fully completed by July 2017, the end of the company's next fiscal year.

PayPal Deep Sixes Windows, BlackBerry and Amazon Apps

Online payment service PayPal is abandoning the apps that it created for Microsoft Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Amazon Fire OS. The company announced the move this week on its blog.

The news paves the way for PayPal to steer users toward the latest versions of its app for Apple's IOS and Google's Android. Those two platforms have come to dominate the mobile payment space. The last day of support for the Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Amazon Kindle apps will be June 30.

PayPal's withdrawal of support from the three platforms points out its eagerness to do business exclusively with Apple and Google, which together accounted for 97 percent of phone sales in the first quarter of 2016, according to sales figures compiled by Gartner Inc.

While the Kindle is still a popular product, Amazon uses a variant of Android on it that makes it less compatible with the standard version of Google's mobile OS, meaning that developers must alter the app if it is to be used with Amazon products.

    Time To Switch

PayPal's announcement comes on the heels of news yesterday that Microsoft is cutting 1,850 jobs in its smartphone business. The latest cuts are in addition to 4,500 jobs Microsoft cut last week following its sell-off of its feature phone assets.

Version 6.0, the newest version of the PayPal app is currently supported on Android devices (pictured above) running OS 4.03 or later and Apple devices running iOS 8.1 or higher. The latter category includes iPhone 4s or higher, iPad 2 or greater, and iPod Touch 5th generation or later. Starting on June 3, customers using older versions of the PayPal mobile app on Android and iOS will need to upgrade to version 6.0.

PayPal said that version 6.0 of the PayPal mobile app has enhanced features and brings to the forefront features that are used most frequently, such as send and request money, PayPal balance and transaction history.

    No Surprise

Thomas Husson, vice president and principal analyst at Forrester Inc., told us that it's not surprising that PayPal was dumping support for Microsoft Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Amazon Fire OS.

"Publishers and developers are no longer investing in these platforms," said Husson. "Why would PayPal invest in legacy platforms that are bound to disappear? Other players should rationalize their investments, too. It makes more sense for PayPal to invest in new platforms and user-interface tools like bots or messaging apps than on tools of the past."

Windows Phone users can still access PayPal via its mobile site on Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge browsers. Outlook.com users can also use the PayPal add-in to send money directly from their inboxes. BlackBerry users can also still send money via BlackBerry Messenger.

    Microsoft to Streamline Smartphone Unit

    Microsoft announced its plans today.

The restructuring will result in a one-time charge of $950 million which includes roughly $200 million for severance payments.

Microsoft says up to 1,350 jobs will be lost at Microsoft Mobile Oy in Finland, plus 500 other jobs globally. The company said that it will be implementing significant job cuts in its devices division, to the tune of 1,850 jobs in addition to the 4,500 jobs that it said last week were going away. Microsoft has struggled to gain momentum in the mobile space. This mobile platform is actually what Microsoft has been working towards, and promising, since the debut of Windows Phone 7.

Whether this commitment to Windows Mobile is worthwhile if the operating system's market share steadfastedly refuses to rise above one or two per cent is something Nadella will have to address in the next few years. Instead, it is refocusing to ensure the division remains effective.

When asked to confirm whether Microsoft was fully halting its smartphone production, a spokesman for the tech giant in the United States told AFP: "We will continue to develop new devices and adapt Windows 10 for small screens, support Lumia Phones such as the Lumia 650, Lumia 950 and Lumia 950XL, and phones from our OEM hardware partners like Acer, Alcatel, HP, Trinity and Vaio".

Microsoft's Windows 10 is already on hundreds of millions of computers out there in the wild, and people seem to like it. At least, based on the feedback from Windows 8, Windows 10 is a pretty big hit. Mr. Nadella also touted the company's Continuum feature, which enables a smartphone running Windows 10 to function as a surrogate PC when connected a video monitor and keyboard. Current and previous Lumia devices will keep receiving software updates. This essentially kills off Microsoft as a serious player in the smartphone hardware market.

The company's stock was up more than 1.5 percent after the announcement Wednesday.

But Microsoft can't live in a mobile world without a mobile platform, even if it's only being used by a handful of core enterprise customers and the odd die-hard consumer. The lay-offs should be completed "substantially" by the end of 2017.

More information about these charges will be provided in Microsoft's fourth-quarter earnings announcement on July 19, 2016, and in the company's 2016 Annual Report on Form 10-K.
