Microsoft is reportedly preparing the final end for its Lumia smartphone line.

The Windows 10 maker is set to ditch the Lumia brand, which has been in circulation since 2011, and end production of all devices by the end of the year.

That's according to a Microsoft employee who told Winbeta that production of Lumia device will end in December 2016, with remaining handsets likely to be sold at a knock-down price.

Rumours of Lumia's demise have been circulating for some time, as Microsoft's Windows Phone devices struggle to compete with Android and iOS rivals.

To combat this, Microsoft is thought to be preparing the launch of an all-new 'Surface Phone', similar to its Surface Book and Surface Pro devices.

The Surface Phone could even be a hybrid device, with leaked images suggesting it will have a keyboard cover that allows users to type, similar to Microsoft's Surface Pro devices.

The future of Windows 10 on mobile had been called into question in recent months, after a long period of struggle for Microsoft's smartphone division.

The company revealed it would be cutting nearly three thousand jobs from its smartphone operations back in July following a long period of decline.

Microsoft had already said it would be laying off 1,850 other workers back in May as it looked to streamline its many operations.

The cuts mean that the company has now let go 10 per cent of its total workforce in the past few years.
