Microsoft Lumia 950: Heats Up, Freezes & Crash

Microsoft has once again changed their minds regarding the handsets that would get a Windows 10 upgrade, and one of those which will not receive any upgrade are the Lumia Windows 8 phones.

What are your thoughts about the two new features that will be added to the Windows 10 Mobile?

Windows Phone is still lagging behind competitors, and sloppy updates are going to force them to make the transition faster.

Google is now offering a shortcut to weather info that you can put on your home screen, which brings up weather info in the Google app. Finally, a way to check the weather on your phone without dialing the local weatherman. You will need to go to Update & security Phone update and restart your phone manually from there for the new language and keyboard to go into effect. OneDrive in Windows 8.1 had a space-saving feature called Placeholders.

We advise you to connect to a wireless network and to fully charge you phone, so it won't shut down during the installation. After the upgrade, you can move files back to your phone if there's enough space. So, if you have the app with a lower version number, the update might hit your device anytime soon. However, you should keep in mind that deleting an app will erase any app data, like the saved progress you've made in a game.

On mobile, restoring all apps from a backup of build 14291 now works, and new languages and keyboards will be correctly downloaded - but there's a bit of a hitch. You can choose to install it immediately or to postpone the update for a more convenient time.

TPM. On the ASUS Zenbook UX31 and some other PCs with TPM chips, you may experience glitchy audio and jumpy movement when using the trackpad due to the "tpm-maintenance" task running constantly in the background instead of once per boot-up like it should. In the new version, the background will be filled out by a blurred video preview and a list of your friends.

"But what we also learned from this feedback is that as the screen size gets bigger-large tablets, 2 in 1s and PCs for example-and you begin to use the apps, expectations shift and people want to limit app clutter".

Microsoft Begins Windows 10 Rollout For Mobile

Microsoft Begins Windows 10 Rollout For Mobile

Windows 10 Mobile is available for devices that are running Windows 8.1; at least for now.

Because of the size of the update, a Wi-Fi Internet connection is required for download and installation. After receiving a lot of flak for supplying an unfinished operating system on the flagship Lumia 950 and 950XL, it kept delaying pushing the update to other Windows Phone 8.1 smartphones.

I have to admit that I'd never heard of the MCK Madosma Q501, but it's a phone for the Japanese market, so hopefully those users will be pleased with the update. The company has also introduced the Windows 10 Mobile OS for their mobile users. After an extended wait for the beta feature, Microsoft is releasing Windows 10 build 14291 today with browser extensions support for Edge.

With the app, users can essentially find out whether their old Lumia device is eligible for an upgrade to the latest Windows 10. Microsoft has finally started the belated rollout of Windows 10 Mobile. To begin with you'll need to download an app called Update Advisor from Microsoft's Windows Store.

Windows 10 Mobile: Which phones get the update first?

If you're running low on storage space before the download, though, beware. However, there is no information on the list of devices that will receive the update. But which ones will get the upgrade is anyone's guess. Use Upgrade Advisor app that will recommend files such as videos or photos that you can move to OneDrive or an SD card.

If you own one of the above Lumia smartphone and have upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile OS, do let us know about your experience in the comment section below.

Windows 10 Mobile Update Delayed For The Lumia Devices

Apparently, Microsoft took note of users' feedback to the Windows 10 mobile update particularly when they commented that the experience didn't meet the expectations.

According to the Chinese leak, the Lenovo smartphone will come with Windows 10 Mobile out of the box which is interesting considering that Microsoft still needs to roll out the Windows 10 Mobile update for many devices.

Beyond adding to Microsoft's top line, growing Windows 10 use should make the platform more attractive to developers. Ensure that the company is experienced in developing Windows app and has a team of experts.

Windows mobile OS, when launched was not received well, but now after years and some acquisitions is gearing up for the competition.

Vodafone Australia has published its Software Update Weekly Wrap page as per which Windows 10 Mobile upgrade should start for several phones tied to its network on March 25.

As for the broader future of Skype, if you want to stick with the existing Skype app on Windows 10 you most certainly can for the foreseeable, but eventually everything will be integrated into the UWP app. Turned out to be a great idea, since Microsoft has now edited the web page to remove any mention of a Windows Phone 10 upgrade.

It also reminded Windows phone users of Microsoft's promise a long time ago to upgrade Windows 7 phones to Windows 8 that never happened.

Microsoft is now pushing a new Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview build to Fast ring members.

"Consistent with our approach to the Windows 10 PC upgrade, we are focused on delivering a high quality experience for our customers", said Michael Fortin (Corporate VP, Core Quality, Windows and Devices Group).

Here's what's new and different about Windows 10 Redstone 14291.

November we released the first major update of Windows 10 with solutions created to address critical business scenarios, security, manageability and ease of deployment.

But not before, Microsoft promises, the Skype UWP app becomes a high-quality and lightweight application with all features on-board. One way of achieving that is to do away with redundant menus while user feedback has also been demanding a single environment 'to manage both their chat and voice conversations'.

The Redstone update should see daylight in June with many other feature updates, but it's clearly a great thing that Microsoft is finally looking into ways to improve Windows Update as well.

The growing recognition of Windows phones is calling out for experts of Windows phone app development, who can provide application at par with Apple and Android.

Remains of the Day: Universal Skype App Coming Soon to Windows Insiders

The new version was written from scratch and features a redesigned user interface, though the functionality is mostly the same as in previous versions (and a few features are still missing).

Thanks to our new PC and Mobile Windows 10 Insider Preview trackers we can easily keep on eye on trends like this which is kind of fun for a geek like me.

The owners of a Lumia smartphone running on Windows 8.1 were told by Microsoft that the release of the Windows 10 Mobile will be delayed, once again, and this time not by days, but by month.

We fixed an issue where new languages and keyboards were not downloading. We are also working with many other partners to enable additional connectors that will be made available soon.

Unfortunately, with a list of fixes comes a list of known issues found in the latest Windows 10 Insider build. There are a lot for PC users, including issues with Narrator and other screen reader apps that prevent them from reading the menu options in the Feedback Hub.

As for the broader future of Skype, if you want to stick with the existing Skype app on Windows 10 you most certainly can for the foreseeable, but eventually everything will be integrated into the UWP app. Global menus are now in a single Settings menu, and Skype says contextual menus will appear in upcoming releases.

If you do spot anything new or interesting after you download and install the new Skype version, please let us know in the comments. The rest of phones have weak specifications, old Qualcomm S4 chipsets or 512MB of RAM and they're not capable of running this new software. Additionally, Hyper-V users with a Virtual Switch configured as a network adapter will see a red-colored "X" in the taskbar's notification area. When this happens, there is an issue in this build where Bluetooth will then repeatedly scan for devices.

PCs that use Windows Hello or a PIN to sign-in to the device will launch the Microsoft Passport service.

Microsoft has recently rolled out the Windows 10 Mobile update for several of their Lumia devices, and this Windows 10 Mobile Redstone update is expected to cheer things up for the users.

The list of the Lumia handsets which will get a Windows 10 Mobile upgrade include the Lumia 1520, Lumia 930, Lumia 830, Lumia 730, Lumia 735, Lumia 640, Lumia 640XL, Lumia 635 1GB, Lumia 636 1GB, Lumia 638 1GB, Lumia 540, Lumia 535, Lumia 532, Lumia 435, and the Lumia 430. There is no workaround for this issue on Mobile.

Windows 10 Mobile Grows During Last Month, New Devices Help

Windows 10 Mobile is slowly gaining traction in the market compared to older Windows builds, according to the latest figures from advertising network AdDuplex.

At this stage of the game any movement in the right direction is good news for Microsoft, especially as the results come before the company had rolled out Windows 10 Mobile to older smartphones.

The timeframe for the latest figures only take into account the handful of Windows 10 Mobile devices that have been launched since the OS was released, including Microsoft's own Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL.

While the figures are for February through March, as always AdDuplex takes its figures from one 24 hour period, in this case taking a usage snapshot from March 18, 2016.

Month on month the Windows 10 Mobile user base has increased considerably and now sits at 7.7%, which is a 2.5% increase over the 5.3% active handsets during the previous results. Windows Phone 8.1 remains the dominant build with a massive 81.1% of the market, but from here expect things to change dramatically.

Windows 10 Mobile Usage Feb-Mar

Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 Mobile for numerous handsets this month, although many users of Windows Phone 8.1 devices were left out in the cold. Nevertheless, Windows Phone 8.1 is the only pathway for updates to Windows 10 Mobile, so many people will be upgrading their smartphones over the next weeks and months.

That means that Windows 10 Mobile will continue to grow at a rapid rate from here, at the expense of Windows Phone 8.1.

Of course, the real fight is against Android and iOS and not against older Windows builds, but there is some suggestion that at least some of Windows 10 Mobile growth has come from new devices. Combined older builds that cannot be upgraded (Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 7.x) totaled 1.7%, which is short of the growth for Windows 10 this month.

That suggests some 0.8% of growth over the last month was from new devices. Again, even small good news should be celebrated at the moment.

WhatsApp for Windows Phone gets document sharing feature and video trimmer

25-03-16-04

The Android and iOS versions of WhatsApp have been enjoying the new document sharing functionality since the past few weeks, and it's now time for Windows Phone users to take advantage of the same. This feature has arrived via the latest update to the popular messaging app, which has also brought with it a video trimmer.

It must be noted that only PDF documents can be shared by users over WhatsApp. The makers of this utility still haven't made it possible for Microsoft documents to be sent by users, even on Android and iOS platforms. In fact, when someone tries to share a Word file or an Excel file, it automatically gets converted into a PDF.

The video trimmer is a feature that has arrived extremely late on Windows Phone. It allows you to choose just a part of a video, rather than sending the entire clip. This new ability is accompanying a video compressor which too was recently introduced on the Windows Phone version of WhatsApp to ensure that you can send much longer videos than before.

Recently, the Android version of this messaging utility was blessed with the ability to write in bold and italics. While this functionality is still to reach the iOS version, it has its own new features to boast of. A fresh option on Apple devices running WhatsApp allows users to choose what incoming media they want to store in their phones based on particular chats or groups.

Coming back to the new WhatsApp for Windows Phone update, it is now live on the Windows Store and can be downloaded by those with compatible devices.
