Gail BennettGail Bennett was woken up by the sound of her Lumia 485 phone catching fire in the night.
She had placed it on her bedside table on charge before going to sleep.
Software giant Microsoft claims this is the first time any problem with the Lumia has ever been reported.
"In the early hours of the morning I woke up to find my phone was melting and smouldering," said the 46-year-old, from Chelmsford.

"The whole bedroom reeked of plastic. I was really scared.
"I am really still in shock and keep having trouble getting to sleep and then waking up with nightmares about being burnt alive."
Gail is concerned about the issue affecting other Lumia users.
She claims she had only been using the phone for four months.
Microsoft, which carried out tests on Gail's phone for three months, insist the handset set alight because the battery was "dented" and "pierced".
Gail has only just been told the results of Microsoft's tests.

CAUSE: A spokesperson for Microsoft blamed the battery being dented and piercedClaims which Gail denies.
"I can assure you that the phone was not damaged by my husband or myself," Gail said.
A Microsoft spokesperson said: "We take product safety very seriously.
"In this case, specialist forensic analysis showed the lithium battery had previously been dented and pierced as a result of external mechanical force.
"This caused a short circuit within the battery.
"Product packaging warns customers against the continued use of a damaged battery."
Last month Colin Crow was left in agony after an e-cigaretter exploded "like a firework" in his pocket on a night out.
And in January mum Danika Jones was rushed to hospital after suffering horrific burns when her Thermomix exploded when she was cooking dinner.
