Here’s what’s improved and fixed in Windows 10 Build 14379

DSC02326

Microsoft has just released Windows 10 Build 14379 to Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring for PCs and Mobile. As you may have already guessed, the latest build does not introduce any new features, meaning that it only comes with bug fixes and improvements. With the latest build, the Windows 10 Insider Preview should run pretty smoothly on your main machine, so if you really want to try out the Anniversary Update right now, you might want to check out build 14379.

Here is what's fixed and improved in build 14379 for PCs:

  • We fixed an issue where the size of the Credential UI might not be big enough to display the contents on a PC with High DPI.
  • We fixed an issue where Action Center might crash after dismissing a large number of notifications.
  • We fixed an issue where Centennial app launches from Start or Cortana wouldn't count towards those apps bubbling up in Start's "Most used" list.
  • We fixed an issue where no note would have keyboard focus after minimizing then reopening the Sticky Notes app.
  • And here's what's improved in this build for Mobile:

  • We fixed an issue that could result in a stray focus rectangle becoming visible in certain apps, such as Groove or Cortana, after bringing up the keyboard.
  • We fixed an issue where the aspect ratio of images on live tile wasn't preserved if they need to be shrunk, leading to them appearing stretched.
  • Lastly, here's what's broken in this build for PC:

Using Continuum from your phone on your PC via the Connect app will not work. This should be fixed in the next build.

…and here are the known issues for Mobile:

  • You can open PDFs in Microsoft Edge but won't be able to use touch to interact with the PDF (such as scrolling, pan or zoom). When you try to use touch to interact with a PDF, it will constantly reload the PDF.
  • We've heard you and we are investigating decreases in battery life on older devices such as the Lumia 830, 930, and 1520.
  • We're also investigating Wi-Fi disconnect issues – if you are experiencing an issue with your Wi-Fi disconnecting, please see this forum post and make sure to upvote Wi-Fi disconnecting issues in the Feedback Hub.
  • REMINDER: We have changed the backup format for Windows 10 Mobile devices to reduce the size of the backup stored in OneDrive. As a result, if you do a backup on a device running the latest Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview builds and move back to the released version of Windows 10 Mobile (Build 10586) and restore from your backup – your Start screen layout won't restore and remain the default Start layout. Your previous backup also gets overwritten. If you need to go back to Build 10586 temporarily, once you are on Build 10586 you should disable backup so it doesn't overwrite the good backup from Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview builds.
  • In case you are wondering, the latest build is available to Insiders in the Fast Ring and you can get it by heading over to Settings > Update & Security and checking for updates.

WhatsApp for Windows Phone Gets a Fix for Buggy Multi-Select Feature

The latest update for WhatsApp's Windows Phone app brings a major fix for the bug which affected multi-select feature and rendered the chat screen unresponsive and inactive. The screen got totally unresponsive and did not function until the back button was pushed to go back to the WhatsApp home.

This bug was introduced with version 2.16.106 of the app, which introduced quote support for replies, a slightly redesigned user interface, and an improved image picker that made accessing and attaching images within the app easier.

Version 2.16.108 resolves the issue with the same set of features that were introduced last night. Apart from the major bug fix, this update doesn't seem to include any other new features or UI improvements.  The user interface has the same tweaks, such as moving the send message button to the right of the text box, rather than right above the Start button.

Last month, WhatsApp introduced its desktop client for Windows and Mac. The application offers all the same features and shortcuts, which we have already seen on WhatsApp for Web. However, to use it, you'll have to sync your mobile account. If you are looking for a bespoke WhatsApp desktop account, you will be left waiting.

As for the Windows Phone app, if you're still experiencing issues, you can get the fix from Windows Phone Store.

Windows 10 Mobile OS Takes One Major Foot Forward – Reaches Older Nokia Lumia Windows Phone Devices:

Over the past several years, Microsoft has been a company which has been a mainstay in the world of software and OS technology. The company has been coming out with a large number of innovations and new releases which have helped shape up the markets really well. Microsoft, over the past several years, has now managed to bring forward a huge change in the markets, and it has slowly been moving forward into the hardware spectrum. Microsoft has now been anticipated to bring forward an even larger number of changes as they progress forward into the world of hardware technology. The company has been working in the markets of the smartphone devices for quite a while now, and it is expected that they will be coming out with even bigger changes in the days to follow. In a recent update, the Windows 10 Mobile OS update has been released for the older Nokia Lumia device in March, bringing many devices up to speed with the latest technologies.

    Windows-10-Mobile-Lumia

    The Windows 10 Mobile OS update came out for the users of many older Nokia Lumia phones such as Lumia 1520, 930, 640, 640XL, 730, 735, 830, 532, 535, 540, 635 1GB, 636 1GB, 638 1GB, 430, 435, BLU Win HD w510u, BLU Win HD LTE x150q, and the MCJ Madosma Q501 devices.

There has been quite a controversy over this selective release as the users of other popular devices such as the Lumia 520, Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1320 are upset that their devices have not received this update. Microsoft has explained why this selective release was made in their blog, saying:

"This list includes a limited set of Windows Phone 8.1 devices and does not include some devices that are currently running Windows 10 Mobile in the Windows 10 Mobile Insider program. As Windows 10 delivers significant new innovations, many older devices are not able to successfully upgrade without an impact on the customer experience. Our goal is to only offer the Windows 10 upgrade to devices that we are confident can continue to deliver a good customer experience," the company said.

Will Microsoft ever be able to please all the Windows 10 users?

    Image: ZDNet

With 350 million users on Windows 10, "customer satisfaction is higher than any previous version of Windows", according to Microsoft.

But at the same time, there's a flurry of complaints that one preview feature -- being able to see and reply to text messages from your Windows Phone on your PC -- is being dropped from the Messaging app, with the promise that it will come back as part of Skype instead.

That's frustrating, not just because of the 'jam tomorrow' promise when users thought the new feature was ready, but because Skype already has a huge backlog to get through on Windows 10.

The UWP Skype Preview app, which replaces the Store Skype app from Windows 8, doesn't even have a dialler, so you can only call existing contacts, and you can't use any systems that need you to enter a PIN or a choice from a menu, like your bank or a conference call.

Moving this feature from Messaging to Skype emphasizes that Skype is where Microsoft wants you to go to do messages. That used to be a sensitive subject; carriers used to dislike Skype because of the impact on SMS and call revenues. With less emphasis on Windows 10 Mobile at the moment, that may not put Microsoft off the kind of integration it once fought shy of.

Despite some of the more negative stories about this change, you can still see and reply to text messages on your PC in the Anniversary Update by using Cortana, with both Windows 10 Mobile and Android (if you have the Cortana app installed there). You can send a text that isn't a reply, as long as it's to someone in your address book, and you'll see their reply -- but you can't go and look at previous messages. (And yes, that matters; imagine the text message I sent you yesterday has the name of the restaurant where we're meeting for dinner and you left your phone at home.)

It's not clear if moving the feature to Skype will make it any easier to bring text message sync to iOS, which Microsoft discussed at Build this year.

    The Windows 10 two-step

Microsoft is doing a lot of 'two steps forward, one step sideways' still, which is probably inevitable as Windows becomes a service; a service changes frequently and not every change is going to suit everyone. Improving one feature while regressing or removing another might be inevitable as Microsoft tries to develop what the majority of people want, but it's painful when the feature you lose is one you rely on. (Passion is always better than disinterest, but there's frustration here too.)

It's perhaps most understandable in Edge, because Microsoft is building so much of the browser app (as opposed to the engine) from scratch. Edge now has ad blocking, password management extensions, and a basic OneNote clipper to go with a rendering engine that keeps up with web standards as well or better than any other browser. But I still miss things like being able to search and filter the history, being able to quickly open more than the most recently closed tab, being able to see thumbnails for open tabs from the taskbar, and being able to pin sites to the taskbar.

But everyone is going to have their own list of changes they're not happy about. I can't even consider moving from Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 10 Mobile, where I can have a great web browser and make Skype calls from the address book and see my OneDrive photos in the same place as local photos, until the OneNote app lets me record audio for more than 30 seconds at a time. If blocking unlimited recording in OneNote is to protect my battery, I feel the need to remind Microsoft it's my battery and I'll use it if I want to.

A unified store for Windows and Windows phones means easier publishing for developers, and a common system that can be improved once rather than twice for users. But it also means losing one of the really useful features of the old Windows Phone Marketplace: being able to read about a cool new app on your PC, click through and send it directly to your phone rather than having to remember to look it up later.

There's placeholders of course; these went away in an early Windows 10 preview in November 2014 and the promised replacement to handle the same 'scenarios' hasn't arrive. The Photos app can show you your photos on OneDrive and the OneDrive app can show you your OneDrive files -- but only when you're online, and without any of the sophisticated file management features of Explorer.

There's also losing the option of setting Windows Update to always remind me to schedule when I want my PC to restart, rather than having it just happen when I'm away from my PC. This was one of my favourite features in Windows 10, making up for the fact that applications are no longer automatically re-opened when Windows restarts. The new 'working hours' settings that replace the notification option only let you choose ten hours when you need to have your PC available; I don't work the same ten hours every day, and I need my PC for things outside those ten hours, so that doesn't help me. If I notice there's a restart pending, I can still choose to schedule it -- making it doubly frustrating that Windows no longer reminds me to do that or even makes it easy for me to notice there's a restart coming.

Turning Windows into a service involves repeatedly 'moving your cheese', to use the common metaphor, for changes that you're supposed to be too adult to care about. Sometimes your cheese moves; sometimes it changes from Camembert to processed cheese (or vice versa); sometimes it vanishes from the cheeseboard entirely.

    'Don't get comfortable. Keep hustling'

That's nothing new, but the Insider program for Windows (and now for Office and Skye and Bing as well) has turned what used to be a three-yearly tryout into a way of life. Experimentation, changes and yes, disappointments and regressions are going to keep happening. You can't separate the huge changes that improve security (from FIDO support to moving fonts out of the kernel) from the new features like nested virtualisation and native 3D printing, from the tweaks to the interface (which have given me most of the Windows 8 UI I loved but also a Wi-Fi interface that has me turn off my connection by accident about once a day).

If you want Windows Hello to be protected by the same hardware-based security container as the logon process (you may be surprised to learn that it wasn't already), you have to upgrade to the Anniversary Update and accept the other changes (like recently added apps pushing the ones you use most further down the Start menu).

It's the same with Office as a service. I like many of the new little features that arrive in Office 2016, but losing the pinned and recent folders in the Save As dialog means it takes me three times as long to save new documents in the right place; it's so much of a productivity hit that I've reverted to the release before that change to get the feature back on at least one of my PCs.

"Don't get comfortable. Keep hustling," Dona Sarkar, who runs the Windows Insider program, said in the blog announcing the features in the Anniversary Update. He was referring to the testing Microsoft relies on Insiders to do, but it applies to the way you have to deal with Windows and Office now, which is the same as cloud services and mobile apps.

Modern software changes frequently, improves frequently -- but may well end up changing in ways not all users like. The changes may be small, but that doesn't mean they don't matter very much to some users.

User wins $10K judgement against Microsoft for Windows 10 upgrade

Microsoft is to focus on developers again with the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update release, adding a host of new features and APIs to encourage developers to build on the updated application platform introduced with Windows 10.

Since the release of Windows 10 last summer, users of Windows 7 or Windows 8 whose computers have Windows Update set to automatically update the OS have gotten pop-up notices telling them to upgrade to Windows 10, and the large installation files for it (which can be about 6GB) have downloaded in the background onto their system's main drive, usually without the user directly consenting to this.

There has been quite a controversy over this selective release as the users of other popular devices such as the Lumia 520, Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1320 are upset that their devices have not received this update. One handy life hack mentioned by Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi in a blog post Wednesday morning: Cortana will remember your frequent flyer number and repeat it on command.

Windows 10 has improved its market share at a very fast pace in Europe, especially in the Scandinavian region, and StatCounter now indicates that Windows 7 is no longer the leader in at least one country. It's worth noting, however, that the auto-upgrade notification feature will reportedly be removed from Windows 10 next month, amusingly, through an update.

It's therefore safe to say that there hasn't been any remorse on Microsoft's side, that it stands by its aggressive policies, and that, if there were to be any class action, it would probably fight more aggressively.

Getting more people to use the new software is a key element of CEO Satya Nadella's strategy for rebuilding Microsoft's business, which suffered in recent years as PC sales slumped. But executives also believe Windows 10 provides a better experience and stronger security. However some alternative third-party app is available for the Windows 10 mobile.

Myerson said the new upgrade prompt would show "clear options to upgrade now, schedule a time, or decline the free offer", as can be seen above, as well as dismissing the upgrade when the X was clicked to close the prompt.

Teri Goldstein reportedly said: "I had never heard of Windows 10".

As it happens, Goldstein claims that after the upgrade, her computer began to act weird and crash on a regular basis, according to a report from the Seattle Times.

Windows 10 Build 14376 for PC/Mobile is Downloadable Now !

As we are heading too close to the public launch of the Anniversary Update in July, what Microsoft has done so far is the recent release of a new Windows 10 build for the fast ring of the Windows Insider program.

After the availability of Windows 10 build 14376 for both PC and Mobile, the focus is less on developing new features but bug fixing, while performance improvements are under strong concentration for making it ready for the launch in July.

According to the head of the Windows Insider program,Dona Sarkar, there are no less than 1,800 fixes in this last build, which makes it obvious that we are approaching the moment when the Anniversary Update will finally go live.

The majority of the issues were reported in the previous build and Microsoft has managed to address all those issues including the bug causing the networks or VPN connections in the network fly out on the taskbar to launch correctly. In addition, what next should correct the recently-reported problems causing the store either to crash or to freeze, is the availability of new store update on both PCs and mobile devices.

About bug issues, it is worth mentioning that there are absolutely no known issues in this PC build which is a living proof that development advances quite well, moreover,it ensures the smooth functioning.

Microsoft said that they don't have any known issues to list at the moment for PC. If anything comes up, they'll update this post and add them here.

It comes with the same new backup system that is making it impossible to restore the Start screen layout as long as the mobile build functional. There are also battery issues on a number of Windows Phone devices, for instance, Lumia 830, 930 and 1520. Besides all these, they are working on Wi-Fi disconnect problems as well, while same is the case with a bug that blocks you from using touch to interact with a PDF in Microsoft Edge.

Steam's mobile app finally lands on Windows Phones

Valve may not be too happy about Windows as a PC platform, but the company has finally rolled out a Steam app for Windows mobile devices.

Rejoice o' ye forgotten gamers, or as most people would call us, "Steam gamers who have Windows phones." Valve has heard our entreaties and answered with an official Steam app for Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile.

The new app went live last night; it's still so new that the app didn't appear as a top result when searching for "Steam" on the Windows Store. Searching for "Valve Corporation," however, did bring up the app.

Why this matters: As we've mentioned before, Steam does not let users expedite trades and market transactions without a phone using Steam's Mobile Authenticator. There were some third-party apps that claimed to provide this functionality to Windows mobile users, but trusting a third-party app with your Steam account is insecure and basically madness. Thus Windows phone fans still clamored for an official app. Now it's here, and it looks pretty good.

    Well, almost.

Hands-on with Steam's Windows Phone app darklightsteamapp

Steam using Windows 10 Mobile's light theme (left) vs. the dark theme (right).

One small quibble is the new Steam app doesn't work well with Windows 10 Mobile's light theme. In my tests with a Lumia 950 certain sections of the Steam app were nearly invisible with the light theme enabled, including the Settings screen and chat windows. That's an obvious design flaw that Valve will hopefully fix with an update. (Assuming the company remembers it has a Windows mobile app. You'd be surprised how many developers don't.)

Overall, the Steam app looks pretty nice and is similar to the versions for Android and iOS. The Windows version, however, has far fewer options hidden behind the "hamburger" menu icon on the left hand side.

On Windows, you have menu options for your profile, confirmations, chat, the Steam store, the ability to switch accounts, and the app's settings. The essentials are there, but options like inventory, groups, a friends list, friend activity, and Steam news are missing.

Some of the missing options are still accessible, however—just not from the menu. Your inventory and library, for example, are available via your profile page. You can also get to various games-related information such as news and forum posts by selecting a game from your profile page.

But even with a minimal feature list it's great to see an official Steam app arrive for Windows phone users.

Notably, this app is not a universal windows (UWP) app. Most likely, Valve didn't want to do that since UWP apps work with Windows 10 devices only. Supporting Windows 10 Mobile exclusively doesn't make much sense when a good chunk of Steam users with Windows phones are probably running 8.1. Plus, Valve just needs this app to work on phones, not PCs, tablets, the HoloLens, and Xbox.

Microsoft: Lips are tight for arrival of Snapchat on Windows Phone

According to a tweet posted by the official Spanish account of Lumia support brought hope that Snapchat would arrive on Windows phones sometime in the future. The post also unveiled that for developing such a client, Microsoft was working on Snapchat.

Yet, in actual terms, everyone was still skeptical regarding theSnapchat that would be building an app for Windows phones because it wasn't the first time when Microsoft's social accounts posted information which wasn't considered true particularly after banning all third-party apps on platform by the company and failed to offer that an official client would be developed.

So far, nothing has changed regarding Microsoft's official position for a Snapchat app and the company remains completely tight-lipped on chances to see the enthusiastically-expected client launching on Windows phones,a statement provided.

A company spokesperson said that we've seen great momentum around the Windows Store and Apps. We continue to work with industry leading partners to bring the best experiences to Windows for a broad set of categories, including entertainment, productivity, and gaming. We have nothing further to share.

A few hours ago, the head of the Windows Insider program,Dona Sarkar in a tweet has said that she never heard of such a plan to bring Snapchat on Windows Phone because much space is left for rumours with the statement of company spokesperson. However,Windows Phone might actually be seen by some optimistic users as a sign that Snapchat is coming to their platform.

When asked regarding theSnapchat whether it could land on Windows Phone in case the tweet posted by the Spanish account of Lumia support was accurate, she said "News to me".

Getting Snapchat on Windows phones could really be a big step towards actually addressing the lack of apps on the platform, but the chances to see it happening are rare and dropping with every day to come. It is still awaited for a statement that would set things clear in this adventure; yet, don't live with high hopes that Snapchat will launch on Windows phones.

TCL 560 with iris scanner to launch in India on July 4; here’s what we know so far

By Sambit Satpathy on Jun 28, 2016 at 6:15 PM Email @some_bit comments Tags: TCL TCL 560 News tcl-smartphone-india-launch

Over the weekend, it was reported that TCL was planning on entering the Indian market. The Chinese company is not exactly a new player and has been developing smartphones under the Alcatel brand. The company has now sent out media invites for an event in New Delhi on July 4, where it will be launching its first smartphone for the Indian market — TCL 560.

tcl-560-india-launch-inviteThe July 4 event is a global unveiling, and based on what we have come across so far, the TCL 560 boasts an iris scanner. Iris or retina scanners are turning out to be the next big thing in the mobile industry. Just like a fingerprint, a person's retina is also unique, and an iris scanner is also said to be more secure. It can detect up to 266 traits, as opposed to 40 traits by a fingerprint scanner.

In India, Microsoft introduced retina scanners on its Lumia 650 and Lumia 650XL last year with support for Windows Hello feature. Just yesterday, Reliance Digital launched the LYF Earth 2, which is the first Android smartphone in India to feature a retina scanner. Going forward, Samsung is widely expected to introduce an iris scanner on its Galaxy Note 7 phablet later this year.

Not a lot is known about the TCL 560 smartphone, except that it will feature a 5.5-inch display, quad-core processor, 4G LTE support and will run on Android Marshmallow out-of-the-box. It will be interesting to see how TCL prices the 560 smartphone, but if we were to hazard a guess it could be somewhere between the Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000 mark.

Snapchat is coming to Windows 10 phones… soon

The company has now taken things one step forward, as it released the Windows 10 Mobile OS update to most of the users of the older Nokia Lumia Windows Phone devices in the month of March.

"Cortana works a lot like Google now", YouTube user Austin Evans reports on Cortana and whether users should upgrade with the Windows 10 download.

It was a clear statement of no confidence in Windows Phone - and has been followed by further cuts - and the combination of Nokia's removal and Microsoft's negativity had the expected result: its small market share dwindled even further.

Plenty of people are still kicking along with Windows 7 and will likely stick with it for the foreseeable future.

In India, the payment systems from Apple, Android, Samsung and Microsoft will require many tie-ups with banks.

Jackson, who will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Jesse Williams, who is taking home the Humanitarian Award .

In addition to rolling out a number of bug fixes, the latest build adds a new extension developed by the Microsoft team working on the Edge browser, released along with Windows 10 previous year as the successor to the company's longtime Internet Explorer browser. The compatibility mode will trick any incompatible game (or any application in general) into thinking they're running on an older, compatible version of Windows.

In fact, the company delivered a couple of updates this week, one for the Windows 10 Mobile version, and the other for PCs that delivered a handy tool to fix problems with activating Windows.

But like the Search charm, you can search for both documents on your PC and on the web using Bing. The algorithm that generates the installation ID is a closely guarded secret, but I can confirm from years of testing that it is extremely tolerant of minor changes. The automatic upgrade failed, and now her PC is slow, crashes at times, and could be useless for days. A window will prompt you with "Do you want to open Game bar?" Reactivate Windows 10 feature will available for everyone after the Anniversary Update. All you need to do is click the "Get Windows 10" icon in your system tray and follow the initial set up process.

Go to Settings Update & Security Recovery and select either Go back to Windows 7 or Go back to Windows 8.1. I for one am very excited about the prospect of a Surface Phone.

On Windows 8.1, notifications would appear in the top right of your screen, then disappear - much like previous incarnations of Windows but from the bottom left.

Reliance Digital’s LYF Earth 2 with retina scanner launched for Rs 20,999: Specifications, features

By Sambit Satpathy on Jun 27, 2016 at 6:12 PM Email @some_bit comments Tags: Reliance Digital Reliance Digital LYF Earth 2 News lyf-earth-2-india-launch

Reliance Digital has launched the LYF Earth 2 in India for Rs 20,999. It is the only Android smartphone in India to come with a retina scanner apart from supporting VoLTE and a fingerprint scanner. The smartphone will scan your eye to unlock your phone or any specific app that has been locked. A retina scanner is much more secure as it can recognize up to 266 traits, as opposed to 40 traits by the fingerprint scanner. It is also quite impressive that Reliance Digital has beaten the likes of Samsung, which is widely rumored to be including an iris scanner on its upcoming Galaxy Note 7 phablet.

The only smartphones available in India that include a retina scanner are Microsoft's Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, which were launched towards the end of last year. For the Windows Hello feature to work, Microsoft has integrated two cameras on the smartphones — one infrared camera to light up the eye, and the second camera to click a photo of the eye. You first need to setup a PIN that will act as a backup system. Once the second camera clicks a photo of your eye, a mathematical calculation is performed to create a hash that is checked against the hash stored on your device. If both match, then the phone can be unlocked under two seconds.

LYF Earth 2 specifications, features: The smartphone flaunts a 5-inch full HD (1920×1080 pixels) IPS LCD display with 445ppi, 2.5D curved glass and Gorilla Glass protection. Under the hood is Qualcomm's Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor paired with Adreno 405 GPU and 3GB of RAM. Also on offer is 32GB internal storage, which can be further expanded up to 64GB using a microSD card.

On the photography front, the Earth 2 is equipped with a 13-megapixel camera at the back as well as the front. Both cameras are also accompanied by a LED flash. The rear camera also features laser auto-focus, 4x digital zoom, HRD, panorama, and 1080p video recording capabilities.

It also features a 2,500mAh battery that the company claims is good enough for up to 14 hours of talktime and up to 480 hours on standby mode. Connectivity options include dual-SIM card slots (hybrid setup), 4G with VoLTE support, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, and USB OTG. On the software front, it runs on Android Lollipop 5.1.1.

Reliance Digital is also offering a free Jio 4G SIM card to buyers along with unlimited data and voice plan for a period of three months. The company has launched the LYF Earth 2 in a segment where competition is fierce. Buyers can choose from smartphones like the OnePlus 2, Lenovo Vibe X3, Nexus 5X, and the Moto X Style to name a few. While its specifications are competitive, the retina scanner does give the Earth 2 an edge against its rivals.
